The Navy's 'requirement' for basic swimming proficiency is making it across an olympic sized swimming pool without stopping or dog paddling and then being capable of not panicking long enough to stuff air into your jumpsuit and pretend to be dead.

But yea Id say 1/3 blacks in my boot camp squad had to take at least one extra lesson.  Compare to like 10% of the others.


Its their job to make the sailors 'competent enough', not to address the root cause of the issue.

I remember in the Survivor tv show it always seemed to us the black guy would always have a hard time with whatever swimming challenge the show would inevitably have every season.

Although you'd think people on Survivor would want to learn how to swim before hand.  I mean, the show's always on an island and there's always a challenge involving swimming.
