Eroge is what the smutty VNs are called. Although I've argued that the prominence of such things is distorted by the western fans. e.g. big-boob harem mangas are almost always in the top-10 New York Times mangas each week, but usually nothing like that is in the top 50 selling manga in Japan. There are weekly sales charts for both countries, and they're always like apples and oranges.

A comparable situation to how the west digests manga and anime would be if Chinese guys kept watching American porn flicks on the internet and said "what's with this American 'live action movies' - they're nothing but smut!" The vast majority of Japanese people (including ones who consider themselves anime watchers) have never even heard of most of the crazy Japanese stuff that most people on board such as bay12 would all be familiar with.

It is more that Visual novels have a HUUUUUGE problem even selling... The best selling ones often never reaching above a million sales.

Which is why "Eroges" have a higher profile in Visual novels... When they get translated to animes and mangas they tend to take that out... not to mention that they often spawn non-pornographic versions later on.

Why? Because as I said... they have a huge issue selling. So... yes... the porn is tacked freeken on! It is made to be as unobtrusive and on the side as possible.

Well, my main example would be Fate Stay/Night of which I've completed the first 1/3rd. There were two sex scenes (which you can skip) that probably total a handful of minutes each (almost all of which was just text descriptions of what was happening), and the entire route took me 72+ hours to complete. So yeah, it had "sex scenes" to about the same degree that a typical Hollywood action movie would. So, you maybe get 15-30 seconds of "sexual" dialogue for each hour of "normal" dialogue. Almost all the "adult" visual novels that do get adapted to TV anime are of this type: basically a few infrequent "sexy" scenes as a gimmick, which is why it's so easy to remove the sex scenes and make an all-ages version.

There have been some exceptions (more full-on eroges getting a TV adaptation), but the animes from those are usually pretty obscure or get critically panned (School Days).

Are you equalizing corporeal punishment (including things like stocks of different kind here for simplicity) with torture?  Or what is your definition of torture here?

Corporeal punishment can include torture (Solitary Confinement is a form of torture, for example. Well at least prolonged solitary) but not all Corporeal punishment is torture.

It just wasn't unusual for prisons back then to torture their inmates either as a common occurrence, part of the punishment, or as a form of compliance.

In fact IGNORING solitary... the idea that prisons shouldn't torture you is relatively recent.

HECK! Modern Canadian Military Prisons employ torture (unless this changed in the last 10 years). The reason they are tolerated is the torture is accounted for in sentence and can REALLY cut down on your stay.

Also why is it that people tell the story "The Boy who cried wolf" and never catch onto the irony that it is "don't tell a lie"... when the moral is just as likely "Always take emergencies seriously"... As the villagers are just as guilty as the boy.
