For a terrible moment I thought this was America Ameripol thread.
In my own wtf news, I got two boxes of chicken wings and chips even though I only paid for one. I did not notice at first, but I noticed in time that I could have turned back and notified the store owners. Yet I did not, marking my first such inequity, my conscience screams on principle, even though it was only £2.40. My stomach on the other hand rationalized it a thousand ways, "it is their mistake, you had to wait longer than usual, you do not have the money to waste, you need the extra protein" e.t.c., as I was very hungry and needed something to break up the monotony of oats, rice, tea and noodles. On my way back home I encountered a particularly tall homeless man, begging for any spare change or excess food. I suspect due to my resting murder face, he did not expect anything from me, so was surprised when I offered him some of my chicken wings (which as fate had it, I had received extra of as discussed earlier). What intrigued me the most was that as soon as he had my offered chicken wings, he was off to the next train carriage to beg for more food and change - it was quite startling, as in the absence of any words (lacking even thanks), I saw only pure hunger and humiliation in those eyes. This was a Southern Englishman, who by his lack of smell or grime, seemed new to destitution. Of all emotions, the shame of being so reduced as to beg for chicken wings, is one that must burn most painfully. It's not one I have the life experience needed to fully comprehend, and I pray I never do - thus it remains outside of my understanding. wtf? thread indeed
