That feeling when you notice what you're about to do and realise that, no, sticking your bare hands into microwave boiled water is maybe not the best of ideas. Just a titch inadvisable. Lil' bit.

Once, I reached my bare hand into a recently used toaster oven to get the toast out, and I burned the top of my knuckle. I still have the scar. Thoughtless touching FTW?

Something I did not realize was possible until a few months ago. 

Did you know that that little lever you push down on to make toast can go up too after the toast is done?  Toast too deep in the toaster to extract without suffering lava flesh syndrome?  Lift the lever!  Now the toast is within easy reach of your other hand!  Amazing!

All of my fellows (you know who you are, I won't expect you to raise your misshapen burnt hands) can now be safe in knowing that no longer is the toaster a device of fear, but of delicious crispy bread ready to be buttered.

(yes I realized you said toaster oven but I still feel it's relevant.)

I am starting to thing television needs to cram tepid romances into everything.

I am going through dramas and I noticed that nearly all of them are tagged "Romance"...

I wouldn't mind but often times the romance is the LEAST interesting part of the show and yet gets an inordinate amount of screen time.

Hey, as SB noted, you can do more than just lift it. Pull it up with some speed and it can actually launch whatever's in there a bit out of the toaster, letting you grab it before it drops back in. Useful if you happen to be toasting something that ended up being too short for even the simple lift to make it easy to get out.

I've seen repeated warnings on toasters and products intended to enter a toaster that say do NOT use metal object to remove items from the toaster. Probably because every toaster uses bare, high-resistance wires to produce heat, and even though they are high-resistance, they probably could carry a charge through a less-resistance object that comes into contact with it. PRE-EDIT: The metal object could also heat up rather fast or cause damage to the interior of the toaster.

Plastic is probably also bad because it could melt.

I stuck the metal aerial of a remote-controlled car in the toaster when I was a kid. Triggered the circuit-breaker for the house.

Lifting the plunger thing for the toaster usually works enough for me. I accept burns as part of my haste to get toasted things out, though.
