But actually on that note, I'm finally replacing my router that was having a similarish issue.  No notification in the log, the wifi just silently fails if I move that one laptop too much.  So odd.

That is "Sony Music Entertainment Japan". They're technically an independent company from US-based "Sony Music Entertainment". SMEJ's stuff in North America is actually mainly licensed to Colombia Records. There's probably something similar for the rights to their stuff in Aus/NZ. So they probably can't stream that to you for legal reasons because they have a distribution deal with someone else.

Yeah, that's basically what I'm complaining about. Somewhere along the line someone decided to not license the thing in certain countries despite there being no benefit to doing so.

Sony Music Japan only has legal rights to distribute stuff in Japan. Another legal entity has the rights where you live. Both the North American Sony Music and Japanese Sony Music are owned by the same holding corporation, but for all extents and purposes, they're independent companies. They have an ongoing contractual agreement about who has the distribution rights per territory. I'm assuming the North American Sony Music has the rights in Aus and NZ. If that company doesn't want to release it, you're screwed basically.
