Felt nauseated and had minor difficulty breathing for most of the day. All I could... taste, smell?, was cigarette smoke. Anyway, it seems that my mother is smoking more cigarettes in her car, while claiming to be trying to smoke less. She's also drinking before coming to pick me up, as she keeps snacking on stuff to try and disguise the smell on her breath.

This.

I genuinely can't make heads or tails of it. On the one hand, every other repo in that organization looks serious. On the other hand, none of the user accounts do.

My take on it: Commenter #1 thinks that unrestricted software development will allow someone to develop an encryption method that everyone will use that law enforcement cannot, or with great difficulty/cost, crack. They are suggesting restriction methods such as making sure, from what I can tell, developers are legally required to ensure that law enforcement agencies have the key to access any encrypted software developed. Commenter #2 is politely informing Commenter #1 that his idea is stupid.

Mom's friend thinks she is helping.... Thinks.... Points out IT job listing.... I am not an IT person, at all. This job requires 10 years experiene, CISCO, Microsoft server cert, etc.

Helping, I'm sorry, but you aren't.... Older people who think they know alll...

"Well toss in a resume anyhow, nothing ventured, nothing gained...."

I am in no way qualified for this job at all. I don't want a stupid resume floating in HR's drawer if they post something I can do....

... y'know, it just kinda' hit me how vaguely hilarious it is that law enforcement and whatnot are asking for things like that, and just sorta' expecting everyone to believe they are good enough at IT security to keep the thing from getting out.

While they're asking for something that's so completely against every basic tenant of said practice it might as well be the anti-matter equivalent of it.

Leaves you just kinda' going, 'Okay, and if I solve this clever riddle, what prize do I get?'

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

tenant
Tenet.

There's a lot of accents in the SE US where those two sound the same, so it's a fair mistake to make.

Things I did not know:There are accents that make tenet and tenant sound similar.

Mostly because most anything gets slurred together such that you'll be able to distinguish maybe 2-3 consonant sounds if you're not intimately familiar with it.

Commenter #1 is either an FBI agent or a DOJ worker, or possibly a misinformed congressperson. Everyone else is conspicuosly quiet or on apple's side so far.

Nah, it's just that they're pronounced literally identical in this area, and I generally don't use either word enough to remember (or care) which is which :V

Not really slurred together, there's just not a difference in pronunciation. Ten-ent, either way. The one not having to do with renters doesn't really get used enough for anyone to really care, heh.

Least on the version I'm running, it's ctrl-F12, browsing, click the box. Pretty sure I'm a few versions back, though.

Mebbe check the shortcut list, see if there's a key combo for it? Doesn't look like it checking, though.

If you're on a newer version... try shoving opera://flags into the address bar and see if that pops up a thing full of options? If it does, the smooth scrolling thing's probably in there.

E: In other news, I apparently didn't quite parse the words on the donut box entirely. Sour cream flavored donuts are... well. They're edible? I guess. Something along the lines of inoffensively nasty, anyway. I think I thought they were cream cheese, though, which, uh. They're not. At all.

Even though I know the difference, as someone from southern Louisiana, whew yes they sound almost identical when I say them. I bet most of my relatives - who I think have thick accents - would probably sound completely identical.
