Actually, it probably is. Generally, I feel like the police force should be as discouraging as possible - weed out people who aren't really cut out for it, whether because they don't act well under pressure or are in it for a power kick. I'm hoping they've got a partner around to look to for advice and to keep them safe and/or in line if things go to shit with that theory, obviously. And some immediate follow-up with safe work designed to foster comfort with the community should get thrown in there too, since you also obviously don't want to support the paranoia thing we complain about so much, but still.

I know none of that is what went into the fustercluck here, but still. In principle, I think there's a point to be made here about a shitty first day.

Nah, it's pretty much a junk bag of holding, just... not an infinite junk bag of holding. It's a stupidly huge amount of storage, I just managed to shove a stupidly huge amount of vendor trash into it. For reference, I went the entire first remake (and they're looking to be roughly the same length) without that ever happening, despite regularly stripping several places to the ground before emptying the thing. But it turns out there's a limit! Not quite sure what it is, 'cause I'm not going to count it (see again, stupidly huge -- there's at least a few hundred open slots), but it's there. You have to basically consciously decide to avoid shops for quite a while to hit it, though.

And... I definitely enjoy the remakes, at the very least. They're quite different from geneforge -- much more standard adventure fair, significantly more conventionally party based, and generally more... expansive. Pretty fun in a fight/loot/repeat sort of way (with occasional puzzle-bits or talking or whatev'), would probably recommend, especially at the price they're going for over the next few days.

Heard about my cousin's first day on patrol as a police officer today. It was last week, I think, but it was apparently something.

Stopped a speeder, gave him a ticket. Got a call about an OD, and found the house empty, besides the dead body. Was sitting in the patrol car, idling, when some idiot ran at the car with a knife, and got tased for being a fool. And apparently at one point had to break up some amateurs attempting unauthorized autopsies.

I'd have quit right there. That's a fucked up first day.

That sounds like a pretty standard day for a cop, honestly.

Edit: Oh, wait, I remembered that I'm from a shithole, and that one of my cop friends is in Detroit. Carry on.

Is Detroit a shithole? I am not specialist on america, so from my knowledge this city used to be sort of industrial capital, pretty cool background for a city. I would like to be educated on this topic by fellow bayers, huh.

Usual attempts of checking questions like, is south african republic a shithole? End up with unbelievable fallout tier stuff like  semiwild black tribes capturing skyscraper and shitting there so much, that they cant live there and have to capture one more skyscraper/ police is afraid of going into lots of regions/ everyone not totally poor should better have electric razor wire fence or he will get robbed and killed by some black band/ tied up with rubber wheel, splashed with fuel and set on fire for shits and giggles.
Trying to find info in books did lead me to pretty same unbelievable stuff but with conclusion  : they suffered from colonialism, so this is all justified.

Crikey, no. Not that I've heard of, and I've lived in, walked through or at least visited some of the worst places in the country.

A bit, yeah. The townships can be pretty damn scary and hard to police.

Depends on the region, but this is true to some extent. Particularly the very wealthy parts of Johannesburg AFAIK can be pretty bad. Ironically, you're often safer living in one of the better low-class areas. There's a heck of a lot of petty crime (e.g. garden tools tend to go missing. They're sold to pay for drugs, usually), but less of the serious stuff.

This has been known to happen. Often because of vigilante justice. Sometimes because you look funny. Sometimes because you sound funny. Sometimes because you look and sound exactly like anyone else, but you're from Zimbabwe so you must be a filthy criminal dog. It's pretty much entirely confined to the informal settlements, which are the places the police really struggle to handle.

Depends on the books you read. But yes, colonialism is/was/has been/I don't even know a problem.

I'll lay it out quickly: It's a former industrial center in the Rust Belt. Massive amounts of people have left--IIRC it's at something like 30% of its peak population--and huge portions of the city are falling apart. The public services have withdrawn to providing coverage only to select areas because they don't have the budget for more. Detroit was declared bankrupt back in 2013 after its financial situation grew so bad that the governor had to take over. Basically a crime-ridden poorly/totally un-serviced depopulated bankrupt shithole.

'Course, I don't live there, so take that with a grain of salt.

Detroit was a major automobile manufacturing center decades ago.  Years of political corruption and a generally more competitive global automobile market left the city in ruins.  It's practically third-world.

An assortment of reasons. I lived in Mitchell's Plein for two years, walked through iLanga for historic and cultural reasons, been to slums outside Grahamstown and Cape Town for outreach work, and drive through Khayelitsha on an occasional basis for various reasons. Also been to the Jo'burg city centre, which is one of those places you don't leave your car unsupervised.

Also, 'because white folks don't do that' is a good enough reason sometimes.
