'&c' has been a shortening of etcetera for centuries, if I'm not mistaken. It's fallen out of favour recently, but it's still used occasionally.

And the sum of the post gives off wibes that is contrary to that statement, in my opinion. Gotta look at the forest and not just the trees and all that.
...  Reading vibes from short internet statements is an easy way to invent enemies.

Acknowledging that systemic racism is a real problem, then pointing out a possible alternate explanation for some of the shootings, is not racist.
Like, is it racist to suggest that not every shooting was racially motivated?  It feels like a lot of people think so!

I think it's racist as hell to encourage the stereotype that every white cop who shoots a black man was acting on racism, and to shout down any other explanation, even contributing ones, as "racism".  Trivializes the reality of the problem, and kills understanding which could actually help.

This discussion is painful to read.

In new WTF: I just had the strangest toastie I've had in a long time.
And, incidentally, the first toastie I've had in quite a while. It involved kidney beans, onion, mayonnaise, mustard, pepper, chilli flakes, cheese (obviously), and a drizzle of tomato sauce.
It was actually kind of nice. Usually I just have hot mustard, cheese and pepper. Never really experimented with ingredients before. :)

Must admit, I've never seen it used before.

It kinda makes sense, apparently "etcetera" is latin for "and the rest", with "et" being "and".  So &cetera, shortened to &c.
Also if you google a word followed by "etymology", Google provides a neat little chart (:  Was a pleasant surprise.

It's archaic. One mostly sees it in classic literature, but it definitely exists; for instance on this 1658 coin.

That's because & is just an "et" smushed together.

Yeah, but where's the fun in an etymological justification (& = 'and' = 'et' ∴ & = 'et') or a calligraphical justification when you can prove it empirically? :P

Wow, I just learned that the ampersand started as a ligature (typographic styling) of "et". So it's even more legit than you'd think.

I had no idea that was the case. It looks like whoever wrote it had a really shitty hand style though.

I am not saying the guy is Literally Hitler for writing a darkly comical observation/thought on the internet, rolan. There are no enemies here.

That stuff happened all the time with symbols in writing. @ for 'at', all the diaereses for tiny letters written above a big one to indicate pronunciation...

Well yeah, but if you read closely, it's fairly obvious that he was only referring to black people as portrayed by a (probably racist in general) cop show. It's fairly easy to prove empirically that there's black people without baggy pants, after all.

So yeah, you correctly identified a racist pattern, but you faulted the wrong person :P
