I honestly haven't really heard anything bad about Native Americans, other than their ability to turn their heritage to an advantage in the capitalist jungle.
But I guess in movies you only really see rich casino indians, not the everyday person.

I think the issue is that lots of native Americans are living in reservations and are dirt poor doing so.

I always understood that legitimate cultural appropriation means taking another culture's symbolism/traditions/whatever and (this is the key) using it to mock that culture. The Tumblr view of it leaves out the second part.

You don't need to mock someone's culture to appropriate it. That you do something with is what I think makes it actual appropriation.

Typically I hear it in two contexts: appropriating someone's culture for personal gain or profit (say, to capitalize on a resurgence of NA interest so you can make money off it) or appropriating it because it's fashionable and trendy to do so (fake example but, if kids started wearing a single eagle feather in their hair because it's what the latest hero in a movie did.)

Agreed. Although perhaps it is for the best that Hollywood never be allowed to touch other cultures, for from that births cultural bastardisation.

I should have said, more broadly, "to damage the culture". You can argue that faux-Native American crafts take business away from actual Native artists, and it hurts the group in that way. I still don't think that using other cultures' stuff for business is inherently bad, though.

It's an issue of respect in the end, I think. Which weighs very little on the scale compared with money to most business people.

I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

I liken deriding cultural appropriation to the concept of racial purity and the creation of a Folkish state free of the cultural corruption of the money-hungry Jew...

In that its an idea that should not be cast aside lightly, but thrown with great force.

Enough historical context makes so much of today terrifying.
