Isn't the whole "Children can child-pornography themselves" supposed to be an oversight we should have fixed years ago? In fact I have a hard time believing it isn't already patched given it is stupid.

My sex ed basically boiled down to "Do whatever you want, but make sure that every other person involved wants it as well and that everyone is aware of any possible risks and consequences, and that said risks are minimized; be responsible. Also, pornography isn't real."

Edit: Oh, and one lesson was on how to keep things secret, e.g. how to get rid of used condoms.

Those lists are just fodder for moral panic.

Personally, I would say that the contributing factors that lead to people becoming sexual predators have been around for basically as long as there have been modern humans, and that as a result, I dont think there are going to be any shocking changes in the total per-capita rates of production for genuine sexual predators for several decades, if not several centuries.  What has changed, IMO, is the total population density of an area, and thus the increased likelihood that you will at some point bump into one such person.

(EG, we will use a fictitious number of 1% per capita for sexual predator population vs normal population. In dark age europe, you would have had a population of only a few hundred thousand over much of the region-- so, you could walk for miles and miles around, and may never encounter such a person.  However, in the modern post-industrial setting, where we still keep that same 1% rate, we can have several hundred people living in just a quarter mile block radius.  That means that on a densely populated block, you can have 2 or 3 predators right next to you.)

The original intent was that registries like this would enable this compactified population to know which 2 or 3 people in their block to keep their kids/daughters/whatevers away from for their protection.

Instead, they have become a pillory for modern mud slinging, because the bar to entry is VERY low, and once on that list, you have no chance of ever getting removed from it. (Flirting at somebody who takes offense can actually get you on such a list. That's how low the barrier to admission is.)

So, now you have a horribly inflated metric (instead of the 1% actual dangerous predators, you have some 20ish% figure of the population thrown in too), which causes social panic (OMG! Look at all the predators! We GOTTA KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE! We GOTTA make laws STRICTER to protect our /whatevers/!!)  Which in turn, just further exacerbates to the problem.

This should be an abject lesson in why knee-jerk, emotionally charged decision making is NOT suitable for public policy, but people never feel satisfied with that, and seem to always want to do what makes them FEEL better, at that particular instant.

Throw in the media hysterics churning up that shit filled cauldron to drum up ratings, and you have a pretty nasty thing indeed.

Welcome to America.

I just watched Haywire.

To expand upon that. I love movies and I consider my taste in movies to be pretty ok, I like them thoughtful, action packed, story heavy, artsy, whatever, as long as they're good or somehow remarkable. And since my storage space is limited I tend to have very few of them just randomly lying about, and those few that I do keep are all great ones.

Today I was bored and came upon Haywire in the movie folder, I have no idea why or when I downladed it but I figured there must've been a good reason for that, so I fired it up.

And it was the most mediocre thing I have seen in the longest while, it's not even that bad so as to be entertaining, it's just one and a half hours of the most meh thing ever.

So that is one of the WTF's of the day, how the hell did that movie make it into my movie list.

That sounds awkward.

My sex ed consisted of watching naked people play volley ball on the beach during biology.

So, now I know where everything is, but unfortunately can't act on this information unless either on the beach or in the presence of a photo of a beach.

More seriously, most genuine sexual offenses are impulse crimes that identifying previous offenders won't prevent.

There is SOME merit in identifying compulsively recidivist sexual offenders. However, to get on THAT LIST, you need to 1) be a sexual offender, and 2) get caught many times, and 3) fail to respond to corrective action.

That means the barrier to entry on that list is VERY HIGH, and not very low, like the current incarnation is.

Also, guys, when did we suddenly decide that there should be specifically seven genders? I missed the memo. I mean, it's better than binary, but still. /s

Though I don't know what's with the binary hate, 2GOD is clearly best, Rh'o1lor and Drowned1 is only half good and the seven isn't even real

I dunno people are pretty insane when it comes to their views of criminals

They want criminals to be punished and to place them in only the worst conditions, they want their life out of prison to be horrible and for them to relive their crimes over and over again, basically do the crime and you will live in hell... While also denouncing any and all forms of rehabilitation for anything but the most minor and tawdry of crimes.

And they also wonder why people who are subjected to this treatment... I dunno... commit more crime, fail to be rehabilitated, and actually become better criminals because of it.

They shut down a rehabilitation center not far from where I live for no other reason then "Ohhh, criminals shouldn't be treated well" in spite the fact that it was actually so successful it paid for itself.
