Is that old republican or recent republican? I remember the two sides have swapped names in us history but I don't remember when it was. Possibly more than once.

Usually, in America, I've seen 'liberal' and 'conservative' used to describe political leanings, rather than party. For example, FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) was a rather liberal Republican, whilst JFK (John F. Kennedy) was a pretty conservative Democrat.

Also, I use conservative as an insult, but only when I'm being facetious.

Going by 'Murican definitions, FDR was pretty liberal.  His New Deal was a whole pack of socializing plans and legislation. A large portion of it was conducive to the prolonging of the Great Depression. He tried a lot of price and wage control. One of the more infamous programs was where federal agents burned crops and slaughtered young animals to drive prices up, while people were starving.  So yeah.
