I'd say it's more because of 'DOGGY CUTE, MAN TAKE DOGGY' rather than historic reasons. And yes, 'DOGGY CUTE' applies even when we're talking about a massive pile of muscle and bloodlust in the shape of a dog. 's one of 'em subtle differences you learn to detect if you survive to non-littlekidhood.

They're kind of small and fluffy and have big eyes and act like people some times.

I like dogs and have always kept them because I'm generally fond of animals. I think though some people keep dogs out of a desire to have someone be loyal to them and love them unconditionally and in a very obvious way i.e. they have problems with relationships and attachment and possibly control.

By my experience they're usually the same people that love dogs but absolutely hate cats. Watch how they interact with their dogs and you'll see it's often a very one-way process of the dog bending to what the owner wants to do. Cats on the other hand are enigmas with very independent minds; you interact with them on their terms, interaction with them is built largely around pleasing them rather than them pleasing you. The people I'm thinking of would really struggle with that.

For me the order is the other way around. Plus it's really sweet when you're bawling your eyes out and both your dog and cat come up to you and try to comfort you.

It's really nice when you raise them together so they get along well. We sorta did it half-way, raised the puppy in a house full of cats, so he'd completely ignore them but they'd freak out if they walked into a room where he was sleeping. xD

My dog is getting old now and she didn't get along with any puppies we introduced her to, but she loves the cat. They're curling up together on the dog's bed and every now and then I find them sitting in front of the screen door together, enjoying the breeze and watching the world go by.

There is nothing wrong with going both ways. I am the same, at least in this context.

I will never understand why people keep pets. Yeah, they're cute sometimes, but they are often horrible miscreants that have no self control or awareness, and on top of that, you have to clean it up when they shit or puke everywhere. At least kids grow up to the point of not having to worry about the disgusting stuff too often. I could not imagine putting a handful of years of work into training a creature to be just the way you want it and then watching it die of old age or some horrible disease.
