Today I read about the slime incident, the assassination of Richard Garriot and the Crimson Dragon heist. Things like this are both the reason why there should be more MMOs like Ultima Online and the reason why there will never be another.

I remember when Lord British was assassinated.  That was so much fun to read about.  It was a landmark moment, too, because it sparked a lot of fresh debate about what kind of rights a gamer has in something like an MMO.  That kind of thing hadn't really been thought about much before.  I was so starry-eyed about MMOs as the future of gaming back then.

Oh, yes.  It died horribly.  Buried in an avalanche of mainstream commercialization.  Driven by publishers into the deepest vulnerabilities of human psychology for maximum profits.  The genre still calls to me its promises from beneath the rubble and decay, but I've come to accept that it's likely to remain a dream until industry circumstances undergo some major transformation.
