I apparently know a young earth creationist! It came up in conversation that she walked out of a science class because the teacher was 'Teaching it [evolution] as fact rather than as a theory'
I took the liberty of not bothering to explain that a scientific theory was different from a normal one...

Anyway, within five minutes of that conversation...
Me: I thought you said you read the bible.
Her: Well, parts of it.
Me: You should read it all, and think carefully about it!
Her: No!
Me: :o

There is a line between faith and silliness.

More unexpected would be a guy that spends 3 turns fighting a bear, nearly losing, doing absolutely nothing, going back to the lair to ask his master what to do, goes to the inn where the other guys are doing a conspiracy against the master, decapacitates the target that just proposed, burns down the inn and kills a ghost with a randomly enchanted axe.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

So, it was pretty much that she said that she believes the Bible's (almost certainly nowhere near perfectly accurate) record of the chronological order of historical events and people to measure the age of the Earth, but refuses to read it? That seems kind of like refusing to read the Ikea manual, even if you know that it is the only way you'll ever figure out that Swedish wardrobe.

No you see she KNOWS that she knows how the wardrobe goes together, with absolute faith she fucking knows it, and will prove her faith to the wardrobe by refusing to do anything that might disprove that, including read the manual.

I've never heard a fundie refuse to read the bible before. Usually they just rationalize away the parts they don't like. Wow.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Try telling her something ridiculous out of the bible, see what she says, and then tell her it's from the bible.

Jesus kills a fig tree for not bearing fruit out of season [Mark 11:12-14] and has his boys steal a horse so he can have it trample their stuff [Luke 19:29-36].

Maybe tell her about a guy born on Dec 25 of a virgin in a cow-shed, prophesied by stars, converted water into wine, baptized people in water, had 12 disciples, died as a sacrifice for the sins of the world, returned to life after three days and then ascended into the heavens, never to be seen again?

His name was Dionysus.
