The canonicity of the "boasting" explanation has been in question for a very very long time, never being used in anything official except the script that is being referenced. The official novelization used a different line ("timeparts" instead of seconds), and the black-hole-cluster explanation came from LucasFilm directly, rather than being Ascended Fanon as the Darths crew suggests.

I don't see why it's so difficult to just write it off as a mistake. Sure it's fun to come up with wacky explanations where it would actually make sense, but that's hardly required.


My favorite crazy theory is that Han Solo was testing them, seeing how much they knew about space flight so he could determine how royally he could screw them over later. Fools and their money are easily parted, and all that.

It's blatantly obvious that it was a writer's error. They should have simply revised the script. or even dubbed over the line in one of the rereleases. (I don't necessarily agree with the editing done in rereleases, but when it comes to cleaning up obvious errors, that's perfectly fine with me.) If you're insistant on keeping the line, then you have to find some justification for it somewhere.
