So I was thinking, and it becomes more and more obvious that the US is a hipster nation.

You use imperial over metric, Sunday being the first day of the week isn't considered weird, and I'm sure you only have right-side traffic to be different from the Brits.

I had always seen the USA as a country in the "troubled late teen" years where it isnt really sure what it wants to be when it grows up, and is prone to random emotional outbursts. Canada is the older brother or sister in its early 20's so desperatley trying to be a good example. Mexico is the random poor kid that keeps hanging around.

This of course places most of the EU in its early 60's or 70's, just on the harmless and humourous side of senility. France is a batty old lady. Italy is a creepy old man. The UK is a stereotypical old army major. Sweeden is your mates inexplicably fit older mum... and so on.

I have seen this video. You should go find them and see if this is just a joke. I suspect it is. If not, do they mourn all of the plants they eat?

Well, to be fair, it's old growth forests they're caterwauling about, which is a bit different from uprooting a potato.

I don't think they're joking though, I just don't think they're sincere. It strikes me as a "Oh look at us we love trees so much we're going to have a quasi-religious service where we scare the crap out of any animal within ten miles." It is the least tree-like way to mourn a tree possible.

I (like every other snarky commentator ever born) have always found it amusing that we went with the Bald Eagle as a national symbol. Rah rah antinationalism, lol carrioneater mascot, lol, etc.

Really, though. It's like Europe took all the cool animals already and we didn't want to be the dweeb with the turkey mask for the themed masquerade ball, so we grabbed some roadkill and smeared it on our face. Yeah, it's sort of frightening, but not in the way people want.

Being the only Scandinavian country without a monarch, Finland made the obvious choice of picking a lion with a crown as their chosen animal.

Really now? Never mind that to find the closest wild lion one would have to cross a couple of bodies of water and a huge desert.

Also, Canada lately seems to be trying to copy parts of America so... :/ Not sure if we're the older brother any more. Maybe in a few years we'll get back on track. Bloody Harper, he's like our Bush. :c Only Canadian, so (somewhat) polite and more like "Well I'm not all that keen on it, but you can keep your homo marriage and free healthcare, I GUESS."
