Surreal and delicious.

Don't forget the delicious. The suffering makes the meat taste better.

I wish I was joking, really. Effectively inhumane practices actually do produce a tastier meat, and in higher quantities. It's terrible but delicious.

You mean stuff like beating the chicken while alive to produce tenderer blood filled meat?

Or the method of producing veal where you keep the baby cows chained up in dark shacks to stunt their growth?

I lack personal experience in these matters, but I have been told that it does indeed make tastier meat...

This is why I kind of want to stop eating meat. I'm just afraid to talk to my parents and say... "I want to become a vegetarian". I know they will laugh at me.

So did mine. The key really is not to care. You'll get grief for it the rest of your life from some people, but you'll earn a lot more respect among others than any lasting damage.

My Malaysian Grandaunts were angry at me from not being a vegetarian anymore. That interrogation was bloody dreadful :d

There's social stigma to it in a lot of parts of the states, at least. Something about being a pansy or a hippy or a liberal or some similar line of bullshit. Vegan is an insult to a not-inconsiderably number of people ::)

It doesn't actually matter (outside of the costs to maintain the diet, which can be a little higher in some situations, from what I understand), but it's something that separates one from the group, allowing others to treat you as different and indulge in prejudice. Remember, different == bad, unconditionally.

Honestly I think diet is a stupid thing to base social stigma upon :P

If you're going to do something low like that, at least judge people on something applicable  ::)

People stop judging each other = Less people get emotional

It's a separation thing, mostly, from what I understand. You're exhibiting an obvious behavior that's abnormal, which makes it easy to fixate on and react against, despite it having basically zero meaning. "The nail that stands up gets hammered down" and that rot; it's not as prevalent in places like the US, but it's still a fairly common trait of human social interaction. Different == other == bad, unconditionally. Something like diet is just really easy to identify as being different, especially in a society where unusual diets aren't very well accommodated to, in most areas.

I mean, if you're doing something as weird as being a vegetarian, who knows what other sort of freakishness you're getting up to. You might even care about humane treatment of animals, and everyone knows only those sorts of people care about stuff like that ::)

It's silly, but very human. Eh.

I personally could care less what other people eat. It's when they try to force/guilt trip me into being vegan that I draw the line. I don't force you to eat this chicken, so why do you force me to eat your tofu?

I don't get crap about being vegetarian (well except from my mother but she sees conformity as a virtue), but when people ask me why I chose to go vegetarian, I often get people accusing me of being preachy or condescending. Interestingly, it's usually coming from people other than the one who originally asked.

As such, I just say I'd rather not answer whenever someone in a social situation asks. I'll talk one on one about it anytime, but the jerkasses like coming out of the woodwork if given the opportunity to be a bully.

Dunno if my experience is shared by anyone else, but that's how it's happened for me (internet and real life).

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
