He's wrong. Lord of The Rings started out as a simple, light Hobbit sequel, but rapidly took on more and more elements from the unpublished Silmarillion as backstory and became what it is today. The Hobbit, in turn, originated as a fairy tale told to his children, that he editied, expanded, and published (much in the same vein as Alice In Wonderland or Winnie-the-Pooh). The Silmarillion was written to give his made-up languages a historical and literary backing. There was a sense that T wanted to create a European mythology, and the general consensus is now that the events of the Middle-Earth books take place in the distant past of our world, but that's the closest thing to a real link, and it originated very late in production.
