At my new workplace they're bringing in more new people. There's this one guy i don't really like, because he's a bit annoying to work with - I had to help him get set up on a PC, he didn't listen to what I was saying he needed to do, and kept looking at his phone emails, when I have better shit to do and he's holding me up from doing them. Tell him repeatedly to put the phone down and focus, but it's like talking to a brick wall. No self-awarenes, no awareness of how he's affecting those around him.

Well, that's my personal gripe with the guy. Moving on, some girls in our group recently mentioned that he'd told a couple of Indian girls from our company that he doesn't understand how different races can work together. And this is a workplace with a dozen or so different nationalities of people. I ... don't see a bright future for this guy at the company.

Short attention span (check)
Digital media addiction (check)
Sheltered cultural background (check)
Situational obliviousness (check)

OKAY---  Three possible predictions about this guy.

1) He REALLY loves Jesus (And or, He REALLY loves porn. It's one or the other usually, but not always.)
2) He REALLY loves the NRA
3) He REALLY loves talk radio / the GOP / FOX news

Keep us posted. I like getting feedback on my profiling attempts.

I give him about 3 days before he says or does something really, really inappropriate.

It's Australia, though. :P
I guess you could still find FOX News broadcasts down here if you were really keen...

@wierd, this is Australia so those specific cultural influences probably aren't relevant. We have our own equivalents of fiscal / social conservative talk radio though. There's really no-one on television here remotely similar to a conservative talking head however.

The NRA one definitely isn't relevant however. Here's an excerpt from local laws:

https://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?Document_ID=34479

Quote
Provisional licences will be issued for either six or twelve months. Full licences will not be issued until you have held a provisional licence for at least six months and completed the Victorian Handgun Safety Course with an approved target shooting club.
...
The holder of a general category handgun who owns handguns must meet their participation obligations to maintain their licences. For example a person who owns one handgun must participate in a minimum of ten matches/shoot per year. The table below summaries the minimum participation requirements based on the number of handgun classes owned.*

* for 4+ handguns, you need to participate in 16 approved matches per year.

"approved target shooting club" - these guys have all the power as gate-keepers of the gun-shooting hobby. They would be the last people to push for some NRA-like thing. This could conceivably help in America too, if you set it up so you need to be sponsored by a registered club to get guns then they're going to vet you pretty carefully, and it also fractures the gun lobby.

That’s just handguns though. That law doesn’t apply to rifles or shotguns.

Also as someone who has taken a gun safety course myself, the place only teaches you how to handle and store a gun safely, they don’t conduct background checks. That’s the governments job.

Not happy thread material, but nice to know, "Stupid CEO and company making $ billions is not ok for firing workers," is getting some play.

Again, I do not work there either.

I know folks who work at Blizzard. Been peeking to see if they've been commenting at all on the layoff news, haven't seen anything. Presumably they weren't part of the 8% who got laid off.

8% is a big number though. Very profitable companies shouldn't be allowed to fire the employees who made them profitable, just because wall street only got a dollar per share return this quarter instead of a dollar and 25 cents per share this quarter. I like the idea of suspending or revoking the corporate charter and taxing as jndividuals. It hurts the filthy greedy stockholders and gives them something to cry about. Meanwhile these poor people shouldn't lose everything and the taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook. I still remember "tax cuts for job creators...." Broken promises.
