I guess my point here is that self-mutiliation to prove you're a badass is quite common in world cultures. Like, in some Australian tribes, you had to get your dick sliced open before you could be declared an elder, and I've heard that after you join the Spetsnaz GRU, you gotta get your ass beat by everybody else in your squad. Initiation-by-torture seems to be a popular thing almost everywhere to one degree or another.
