quick defense question
« on: October 20, 2010, 03:35:24 pm »

im sitting here.. thinking about wasy to defense fortresses

it is possible to build many steps  leading to your fortress, walls, hallways, ect. lined with lignite? then when push comes to shove, set one unit of magma on it creating a hall of flames, then hose it down afterward?

I'm sure anything flammable will do.

It won't work with contructions. Theoretically, a chain of lignite bridges would be more than adequate. The !!Science!! to be performed now revolves around whether the tiles containing a retracted flaming bridge are safe to traverse or not.

It's also virtually impossible to extinguish it once it's lit, because the game doesn't process the fact that steam doesn't burn too*, so if something can keep itself hot with you throwing water at it, it won't go out.  Ever.

*One of the real reasons water is so nice for fighting fires is not because it cools the fire -- in a large fire, it won't make a difference because the fire is increasing in temperature faster than you can possibly pump water on it.  In fact, a lot of the time, the water won't even reach the flame as a liquid, much less the surface that is actually burning under it.  The reason is all that water boils and steam takes up 1200 times the volume at the same pressure then the same mass of water.  This has the effect of smothering the flames in the same way they get smothered by you throwing dirt on it.

It won't work with contructions. Theoretically, a chain of lignite bridges would be more than adequate. The !!Science!! to be performed now revolves around whether the tiles containing a retracted flaming bridge are safe to traverse or not.

If I had lignite on my map, I'd so test this.

What would you make the hallway from? I don't mean material, I mean designation wise.
Cos if it's constructions, then it won't work. Any construction are totally impervious to all forms of damage. You could set up small 'bombs' of lignite blocks though, and have magma dumped on just the 'bombs' when bad guys get close by.

PRE-POST EDIT: Ninja'd, fak.

I usually tend to use the "flush" command. Its like a huge toilet, but then to dispel any enemies that tend to go into my fortress. Its like a huge flushing toilet, usually ending up with several drowned goblins and an unlucky dwarf. The water rises to a certain level, which activates my overflow floodgate, to prevent the water from overflooding the fortress itself. Then Urist McLever unlocks the rest of the floodgates, and the whole area is cleared of goblins and cleared of water, which is either flooded in my catacombs (note: This will rise the waterlevel) or in a pit (where the leftover water is sucked out).

No miasma if you do it correctly, and you can use the same principal to get rid of all your junk :D

The Science will begin when the magma finishes evaporating.

will dug out lignite tiles set on fire?

because if so.. you can build a wall of inextinguishable fire, then from there you can build a fireproof bridge to squash the flame, and if you do, will it extinuish the flame or not?

10-tile !!lignite bridge!!, retracted: Dwarves path over it just fine.
10-tile !!lignite bridge!!, extended: Dwarves stand in it just fine.

I think something's wrong guys...

EDIT: The fire went out somehow.

Temp and weather. I found I couldn't start the fire with weather off. Maybe I didn't wait long enough. The rain probably put it out, now that I think about it.

Dwarves do not mind being on fire. It's one of their more fatal quirks.  Did you actually check to see if their clothing was on fire, or did you just watch to see how the reacted to it (as in, if they fled from it)?

They stood in it and didn't catch fire. I checked the unit list; burning creatures flash red and yellow, and the smoke from the bridge was obscuring the dwarves. None of their clothing was on fire; the worst wound I saw as a upper body.
