Planet M.U.L.E.
« on: October 10, 2010, 04:31:30 am »

http://www.planetmule.com/

Saw this game being livestreamed today (here if you're interested, it's still live as of this posting) and although it's not my kinda game, I figured I'd share it. We have weird tastes over here, after all. :)

It appears to be a competetive, turn-based multiplayer economics game for 4 players. You buy plots of land, mine resources, and auction things to other players based on what everyone is producing. Graphically, it's deeply reminiscent of an old SNES-era game, with chiptune sound effects and a simplistic, oldschool-lookin' UI.

From the FAQ:
Quote
Planet M.U.L.E. is a game of exploration and economic development for 4 players (human and artificial intelligence alike). The standard game takes place over 12 rounds, each lasting a month in game terms. At the end of the game, if the total net worth of all 4 players is $60,000 or more, the player with the most wealth is declared the "First Founder" and wins the game.

It's in fact older (and I'm old enough to remember :/ ), the planet on which the game takes place is called Irata, which, incidentially (yeah right), is Atari backwards.

Anyways, I downloaded that version a few weeks ago and even played it a few times. It's pretty damn good, and free to boot.

*points to avatar* 1 thing I like about Planet M.U.L.E is the fact that mountain wampus only appear in unclaimed land. When I played we made a mountain wampus reserve. That and online play is good.

Go back to your FPS's and Sports games. This game isn't for you.

To all others:
If you like this, try out some board games like Planet Steam.

Haha, I don't need to explain my gaming habbits to you fools. It isn't like I skipped the RTFM step or anything like that. Even if I know HOW to do everything, I have no idea how to play the game well. Against people who have been playing this game for 10 years, I won't stand a chance, and in the end, I will not know what I am doing wrong.

Now, if some people could play it with me and explain "That isn't a good plot for your first" then I may have a good enough understanding of the game to actually play it. Is there something wrong with having an excuse to play MULE?

Basically the game comes down to a matter of speculation. You have to try and guess which resources will be scare and attempt to maximize your holdings in those areas. Smith-Ore is usually a good bet. You dont want to forget food and energon because without them you'll be unable to operate during your turns and your farms and mines cant produce food without energon.

Mountains - The best place for Smith-ore Mines and (only place for)Whumpus sightings. Solars produce less here. Not sure about Farms.\

Plains - Best place for Solars. Smith-ore might not even get any, cant remember, but not a very good place.

Valley - No mining allowed. Best place for farms. Solar get reduced activity I think.

Players that dont get enough food or energy are usually hurting the first few turns if there is hoarder in the game.

Smith-ore prices may spike every four to six months if there is lots of MULE use but no one sells it to the store. This speculation in smith-ore is the most common route to victory, with the players who engage in it often trailing early in the game.

Crysit is a resource with no use and a random price. A good money maker if you wait til it gets near the max price(somewhere in manual), but pirates will steal it once or twice a game.

I'd be happy to play a game with you, but because of router access issues, I dont think I can host.

Low food means you have a lower timer on your turn, which could mean everything, or be meaningless if you don't really have much to do and are really really SUPER time efficient.

Low energy means lowered production.

Crystite location is random, but I think a high crystite location will be surrounded by medium, then low, and so on. Same with the fun crystite meteor which IIRC is the only way to get a Very High crystite plot. (I used to draw on my TV screen with a marker to find all the good spots when the computer did the assays  :P)

I had the C-64 version, which was quite good except the Atari one had 4 joysticks and you had to use keys for two players in the Commodore (only in the auction, which wasn't so hard since you only need to move up or down).

EDIT: Also, note that while screwing the other players is a valid (and necessary) tactic, you don't want the entire colony to suffer because then you don't get the nifty victory message.
