Also, maybe it should be done with a trigger that rarely and randomly happens. So the volcano erupts at random. When you're not anticipating it any more than the goblin siege. For added !!FUN!!

Or have a "dwarven geologic survey" that can predict the coming eruption a couple days in advance, via the random trigger+a delay timer. Slightly less !!FUN!! but still the realism of random eruptions.

Funnily enough I had thought about using a timer. I intended to make it a smaller feature of future fort along with other timer based mechanics. Seasonal river floods as in the 2D versions being another mechanic. FPS be damned.

This is wonderful and awesome.  But the last line isn't quite perfect, I think it's short by a syllable to flow quite right? 

Perhaps, "... End everything within an hour." ? 

A variant inspired by yours, a bit less visceral but hewing much closer to the original:

Umm, not sure this thread is the right one to necro. Isn't it much more straightforward to pull from magma flow tiles?

If all you want to do is have a magma supply that can keep up with a pump stack, a few magma flow tiles should be sufficient.
