OK, mathing completed.  I've got the following populations at sites in my (Phoebus) 31.14 world, sorted by population:

So, 45k humans, 24k dwarves, 22k elves, 2k goblins, 832 kobolds, 596 human prisoners and 2 dwarf prisoners.

I guess this means my numbers actually do back up others contention that the goblins should be more numerous.

Regardless of population, they still will not invade in any manner.  I have a game in its fifth year in which I embarked in a site "at war" with goblins and elves.  There are plenty of them in the world- more than plenty.  I have yet to see a single elf, kobold, or goblin show up.  Traders show up normally.

I'm afraid your efforts are futile.

If you play as a goblin...will -other- races invade? If so, we have an obvious solution. GOBLIN FORTRESS!!!!

You could try altering some other things. If the 40k strong dwarven civs seem to likely be keeping goblins down you could gimp dwarves. You've nix abducted dwarves causing any murder problems at the same time.

Or dick about with goblin culture some. If just flat out farming makes all the difference you'll at least have a somewhat sucky solution to work from.

It appears that they would, as they have that ------ thing next to them if you add that civ controllable thing and select a goblin civilization on embark.
Unfotunately, you will never get any traders because goblins have no trade next to them no matter what if you just do that.

that is no longer true.

What is your evidence for this? I ran a fortress in 0.31.12 for over 20 years and it has consistently held true.

Considering immigrants appear to be drawn from the world data as of .13 it would seem this is no longer true as of .13, but I don't know if that's actually been confirmed.  Especially if nobody's getting seiges.

I could swear I was attacked by elves, but I think that was my 31.12 world run in 31.14, so it doesn't count for the discussion. :(

I've yet to be attacked in .13/.14 by anything (even snatchers) in about 7 different worldgens going 2-5 years each.   And I verified on each that the goblin civ was alive.

Well, if my olivine walls get stained by invader blood (the .14 world my numbers above are for) I will definitely post it here.  I'm attempting to get metal going, and it looks like I'm going to have to piss off the elves to do it, as at the least I'll see if they care about my tree-farming the surface or not.

If only I could find some iron to go with my marble and olivine. :(

Does anyone have a way of automating a fortress so that I can just let it run while I'm at work, even if it's doing nothing?

Give all the dwarves [NO_EAT]{NO_EMOTION] etc.

Turn off moods.

Go into the announcements file in the init and make sure no announcement pauses your game.

Once, I left a test fort like this running in the background at 160 fps, and I actually forgot about it until I was shutting down my computer and found that 6 years had passed.

Aha.  And, presumably, build a wall around the original seven just in case.

I'll do that as soon as I get back to the place where I left my AC adapter.
