« on: September 28, 2010, 08:27:42 pm »

recently, I had a sudden and massive drop in my fps (40~ to 10~), and I'm just wondering what happened
all that I changed was, A, I downloaded the no exotic program, B, a wave of 4 migrants arrived...

Do you have any stealthed units on your map?  (Goblin thieves, gobllin ambushers, kobolds...)

If software was real world, then it'd be something equivalent of hitting a nail with a hammer and having a building collapse on the other side of town.

Don't worry people, sometimes -moments occur

No, I constantly have 4 squads of guys patrolling my map, so its practically impossible to have snuck past all of them....

Have you been playing with water or magma?  Fluid flow can hurt FPS.

Well, yeah I was making a glass brick road, and that involved messing with some murky pools, but they've all evaporated by now....
if it makes a difference, I've colonised hell, but there are only about 3-4 demons at any given time

Is there blood all over the place, or lots of body parts spattered w/ blood?  Many people think that blood kills FPS.

Another thing that might be able to kill your FPS could be pathing of units in the 3 cavern levels

Do you make sure to feed your dwarfs kitty biscuits? Kitty's are known to kill FPS, mind control dwarfs, and occasionally go thermonuclear.

The biggest FPS killer in the game right now is blood spreading around. I had a fortress with 60+ Dwarves running on year 4 with another 60 animals, and the FPS was 100. As soon as the new hunters in the last migrant wave got around to killing stuff, my FPS dropped to 40! Once the blood was tracked INSIDE my fortress, FPS dropped to 15. After the spring thaw caused all the outside uncovered blood to disappear with the snow, FPS shoots back around 45, and then proceeds to drop quickly.

The problem is that once blood gets on anything, it tends to spread around. Animals are the worst to spread things around, and it is trivially easy for your dwarves and animals to get covered in over 200 individual named and placed entries of blood splatter.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

Too many animals in a small meeting area can cause some horrible pathfinding problems. I had the same problem and a lot of butchery cleared it up.

I wish my cats occasionally went thermonuclear... I will mod those cats immediately!

I regularly use DFclean to make sure my fort doesn't have too much crap around, almost all my animals are in cages ( cept breeding pairs of jaguars, black bears, grizzlies, wolves and cougars), the caverns are totally walled off, I haven't gotten around to making my magma spire....
Does having massive stockpiles of everything count? cause I currently have 15k drink and 10k food, as well as an embark spanning pyramid which I'm quite proud of :P

Yes, stockpiles that big and pyramids would lower your FPS.
