Looking for a good RPG.
« on: September 19, 2010, 12:50:10 pm »

Hello everyone, me again!
With one final request, this isn't for me mind.

My father is looking for a good Roleplaying game. He's been into MMORPGS for a long time now, but he can't stand the monthly fees/cash shops, y'know being forced to pay up..

So he's asked me to find him a good RPG game, so far, I've got him to try Fallout 3 and Dragon Age: Origins, he loves both of these, and would like more..

So, could you recommend what you feel is the best RPG..

His exact words "Something like Zelda, lots of gameplay and subquests, where I can run around for no reason, like in Fallout.".

Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 plus both expansions. Dragon Age is a "spiritual successor" to those games. If he likes those, also pick up Planescape Torment, and Icewind Dale 1 and 2.

Also, Fallout and Fallout 2. Vastly superior to Fallout 3.

Edit: These games are mostly linear, Fallout games are slightly less so, but all of them have tons of quests and such.

Also Morrowind was EXTREMELY open ended and has tons of quests, espically with all the expansion. If he likes shiny more, you can go for Oblivion, but its not as good as Morrowind.

How about Fallout 1 and 2?

I would have thought this would be the logical step.

Fallout 3 is in his eyes, the better game.
He can't stand turn based games, sorry.

[I don't like 1 & 2 as much as 3 either. /Grumble]

But Balders GAte is a good idea.
I've got Neverwinter Nights? Isn't that like Icewind Dale?

Neverwinter nights games are pretty decent, not as complex as Icewind Dale games though. Those are worth a little bit.

Neverwinter Nights 1 is an editor with an okay game packaged with it.  NWN 2 is...well...the ending is painful.

Icewind Dale is a hack and slash RPG, rather linear and almost completely focused on combat.  I haven't played IWD2, but it's probably a lot like the first.

He could try S.T.A.L.K.E.R., although it lacks leveling up.
And should Fallout: New Vegas come out, get him to rent that.

What Grishnak said.
Also, if he wants to get back into mmos he could google for "free" servers. Almost every game got those.

Sense the likes of Oblivion and the Fallout series has already been dropped into this thread, I'll add another one, although this is just my personal preference.

Try Fable: The Lost Chapters.  Its purely for the PC, has a decent sized modding community, and the upcoming Fable 3 will also be released on the PC, so its something to look forward to.  8)

If he doesn't mind old graphics, then Fallout and Darklands. Maybe Ultima 6 and 7, but I'm not sure about subquests in those.

Otherwise, Morrowind, Gothic 1 and 2.

Oblivion is pretty much Fallout 3 with a different storyline.

Morrowind is a must.

And I just started playing Mount & Blade, and while there aren't unique quests (It randomly selects one from a list depending on who you ask) it is extremely fun and you can just run around doing whatever you want.

Nope, that's on the Xbox as well.
But I'll be sure to get him to look at Fable, thank you.

Thanks Ivefan, but nope. He can't play Stalker if it doesn't have levelling up.. Weird ehh?
And he can't do Private servers, sorry.

Y'all suggesting things should probably read the guy's later posts first -- and/or he should modify the original post: he's not looking for turn-based games. We all know Fallout and Arcanum are great, but they just aren't what he's looking for, and trying to shove those kinds of games down someone's throat by force are an insult both to the person and to the game. :P
