Alvin Green's not boring or traditional, so that's probably not who he means.  C'mon, you want politicians who aren't beholden to money, why not root for a guy who apparently just magicked his way onto the ballot.

Depends on your point of view. It could be argued that Ross Perot and the Reform Party were essentially disaffected Republicans

It could be argued.  But the exit polls didn't back it up.

In other news, I am sorely tempted to take off work and go attend the Rally to Restore Sanity.

I might even squeeze in time to attend Colbert's counter-rally, the March to Keep Fear Alive.

You have to love it when political satire meets performance art. This could actually be a lot of fun, and a good way to introduce my daughter to politics in a safe, non-hostile environment.

I know there's several Bay12'ers around the Washington area.  It's your duty for at least one of you to attend the show and report back.  Take a sign with you, I hope to see you on TV.

As long as we've got a thread for talking about wacky politics, especially those obsessed with tea, I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Christine O'Donnell tapes.

Oh, you haven't heard, you say?  Well, the big darling winner of the Republican senate primary in Delaware says she used to practice witchcraft to get dates, and swears up and down it's all real and witches are dangerous.  Or at least, she was saying things like this a decade ago on Bill Maher's old Comedy Central show.  Maher claims to have another twenty appearances on tape, and he understands showmanship enough not to give away your best material in the first act.  Let's no even get into her Abstinence Education tapes where she tried to sell that masturbation is equivalent to adultery.  She's a keeper alright.

Oh and, anytime you hear someone say nobody ever heard of O'Donnell before, admit you too didn't Google her earlier, and tell them she already ran and lost the Delaware senate race two years ago against Joe Biden.

Even though I think Conservative Republicans will prevail this November overall, it's going to be hilarious watching them tap dance around this one. Rove has already redacted his earlier comments. Ah, it's going to be fun to watch just how far party loyalty goes this cycle, and interesting to see what kind of coalition Republicans have to settle for.

And how much the "new" brand of conservatives turn out to be like the ones we already have, once their ass hits the chair and they don't have to make speeches anymore. It's always fun to watch the Party of Doctrine face the political realities of holding office, and start compromising. Maybe we'll end up with a twice-brewed Tea Party, more distilled and crazy than the first!

Then I would think you'd be a little upset at a newly-hailed member of the Republican party equating it with Satanism.  Surely that strikes a chord?

In O'Donnell's defense, she delivered that phrase on the same level that a frat girl would. "It was, like, satanism and stuff!"

Which was probably about the age she was when she had this experience.

Uh, no. My wife agrees.

And Nenjin is in the right frame of mind. It was high school. Big fucking whoop, Aqizzar. Why don't you ask for her birth certificate while we're on the subject of silly nonsense that has nothing to do with the issues.

Kind of like "it was college" was such a persuasive argument for the "I only inhaled" "It was a college protest" things and all the other little politically inconvenient behaviors people have had in the past?

How about decrying gay marriage in the same breath you use to tap your desire for anonymous gay bathroom sex?

Or harping on where the damn president was born even though it's been proven he's where he says he's from? Nothing like going back 40+ years to make your point, which doesn't even exist.

Seriously, Conservative Republicans make their living harping on shit people did 20 or more years ago. Where's their outrage now, or whenever a member of their own party does exactly the thing they decry? I guess you can do whatever you want running as a Republican, as long as you say you're sorry for it during the election cycle.

I give O'Donnell a pass for being a ditz and sounding like a ditz. The Internet had our backs on this one. Social conservatives don't get one so they can politely wave this away, just like all the other fucked up pasts of Tea Party candidates. Like the one who admitted she had an affair and STILL got elected. The hypocrisy this year would kill me if it weren't so fucking hilarious.

According to the beliefs of your own party and demo, a hell of a lot. Or did you suddenly develop religious dogma amnesia because it's a convenient way to give a non-answer? Do we need to dig up the Wiccan thread to show what you joke about as it relates to Wicca, implying what you think of it?

It was high school. Big fucking whoop, Aqizzar. Why don't you ask for her birth certificate while we're on the subject of silly nonsense that has nothing to do with the issues.

Yes, birth certificates, and radical pastors too, I'm sure.  Be fucking whoop, right?  Be honest with yourself for once, and answer this question: If Christine O'Donnell was a Democrat, would she be treated any differently for such a comment?

Since you're probably not going to answer, as you never do when you know you have nothing to say, I'll answer for you.  Yes.  If a Democratic nominee for an office said they used to "dabble in witchcraft", at any time in their lives, it would plastered across the front page of the Drudge Report, the cover of the New York Post, and the tape would air every hour on the hour on Fox News.

You don't get to cry foul and pretend you're above the fray when a wacky issue comes along that makes a candidate allied with an ideology you like look like an idiot.  (And with appologies to your wife, if indeed true at all, that has nothing to do with the witch stuff, it has to do with how O'Donnell talks about it herself.)  Let alone trying to equate an evangelical Christian, who campaigns and makes money on being such, saying they used to practice what they thought was witchcraft to get a date, with paranoid racist bullshit made up completely outside of a person's doing.  Of course, if you were any kind of honest with yourself, you too could spot such a transparently false equivalence from a mile away.

I don't see any reason why it should keep someone from political office, do you?

Aqizzar, what I'm getting at is this. Rambling about non-issues is all you've accused me of doing, and now you're doing the same.

Aqizzar, what I'm getting at is this. Rambling about non-issues is all you've accused me of doing, and now you're doing the same.

First, I don't think a person who's made a career and political campaign of being a fundamentalist Christian and has gone on record berating people who believe otherwise deserves a free pass for once frivolously doing exactly what she's made money demonizing.  How strongly that effects a person's decision to vote for her is their own choice, but I believe it's a perfectly legitimate issue.  That you continue to insist it's somehow the same as made up nonsense about the President's birthplace just shows what kind of partisan blinders you're wedded to.

Second, I think calling out prima facie hypocrisy is always a good time.  Remember, you started it.
