Scourge bug - not exactly what i thought it was?
« on: September 12, 2010, 02:43:45 pm »

Everyone was going around saying they were like supersonic hammers or something so i was testing it and it was working like how a hammer generally works(except a million times better), so i checked the raws and scourges are actually an edged weapon, not blunt at all.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So it's edged? My no quality silver scourge dropped by some random goblin is penetrating steel armor and breaking spines like crazy. The actual master lasher in question doesn't get a whole lot of actual kills, but half the attacks in her logs are bruised/broken spines/lungs/guts/other important organs. The other half are chipped bones, which seems like it wouldn't actually be anything? Doesn't seem to be a fracture, because there's a seperate thing for that.

Anyway, just curious as to whether a steel or silver scourge would be best, considering it's acting like a hammer but listed as an edged weapon.

It is whips that act as hammers.

Scourges act like dwarvern laser swords, whips (And flails, to a lesser extent) are the ones which act as tiny ultrasonic hammers.

A scourge is a whip with metal blades embedded in the business end of it, normally as a punishment or torture device. So a scourge is, indeed, an edged weapon.

oh.

Well there's still the oddity of silver penetrating steel reliably, but other than that i guess i'll look for a steel scourge instead.

Bronze is probably the best you'll find without modding them to be dwarf-makeable.

It penetrated steel because of the aforementioned similarity to a laser sword. It will cut through almost anything due to the entire force of the weapon being applied to a tiny point of the armour.

I'm just going to go ahead and check to see how adamantine armour fares against a bronze scourge.

EDIT: As expected, the scourge had no trouble at all tearing apart the blue metal.

EDIT2: Slade appears to be nigh invulnerable to the bronze scourge, though.

I've got the Fortress Defense mod going, pretty sure in a different game i saw a steel scourge, though all i've seen so far in this one is silver and copper.

Time to convert my entire military into scourge-masters.

I tried having a squadron of mixed whippers and scourges, but I found the whips were way more effective. The scourges just didn't seem to do that much comparitively. They'd be delivering flesh wounds (through armor, yes, but nothing serious) while the whips were breaking limbs left and right and eventually shoving someone's foot through their brain. I then converted them all to whips.

I dunno, I just watched ten dwarves, fully kitted out in adamantine armour, get massacred in seconds by a single dwarf with equal armour and a copper scourge.

I'll check how whips fare as well I suppose.

EDIT: I checked, whips do less consistant damage but get a lot more instakill blows.

I just tested 15 v 15, bronze whips vs. bronze scourges.

Full adamantine armor: 1 whip dwarf was slain, two were knocked unconscious. Total slaughter.

Without armor: scourges won, three survivors, one of whom has had just about all his limbs broken.

Conclusion: either whips are better than scourges, or bronze is better for blunt weapons than edged ones.
