NPC Mercy
« on: September 05, 2010, 08:24:09 pm »

This is a loose thought I had.

What if NPCs, instead of beating [you] (this can apply to anything, really) to death every time, stopped when you are utterly unable to attack back or move, then captured you, or tossed you out in to the wild... or even tortured you?

The chances of this happening could, of course, be decided by [PERSONALITY] tags.
Example,
[PERSONALITY:MERCY:100:100:100] would be an entity that always captured, while
[PERSONALITY:MERCY:20:40:50] would be an enity that almost always tortures.

There are already ethics for torture -

Quote from: MOUNTAIN entity entry
   [ETHIC:TORTURE_AS_EXAMPLE:UNTHINKABLE]
   [ETHIC:TORTURE_FOR_INFORMATION:UNTHINKABLE]
   [ETHIC:TORTURE_FOR_FUN:UNTHINKABLE]
   [ETHIC:TORTURE_ANIMALS:UNTHINKABLE]

(not to mention ones governing how breaches of laws should be punished)

The currently existing personality tokens are likely comprehensive enough to be able to handle the preferences of individuals (SYMPATHY, SELF_DISCIPLINE, DUTIFULNESS, EXCITEMENT_SEEKING, EMOTIONALITY, IMAGINATION, INTELLECTUAL_CURIOSITY, ARTISTIC_INTEREST...).

The issue of civs just killing anything that breaks a law needs to be addressed, yes, and it's already on the books.

Beeing captured is already in the dev plan.

From the latest DF Talk:

Capntastic:   That's the essence of combat, you never give up. You keep punching and punching.
Toady:   Unless you can surrender and survive.
Rainseeker:   That's true! Okay that's a good question, are they going to be able to surrender?
Toady:   Yeah, I think that made the new dev pages, because you're going to need to be able to get people to submit so that you can figure out where the real villains are. And if you're a thief or otherwise criminal you're going to need to be able to surrender to the guards so you can get hauled off to have your fingers chopped off and stuff. So it's going to be an important new addition, and longer life all around.
Rainseeker:   Now if you lose your fingers does that mean that you've pretty much lost the game? You can't really do much else then I guess.

etc etc etc

Exactly. And hopefully if they cut some of my parts off, I can find what they cut off and kill them with them for some suh-weeeet revenge.
