Self-referential artifacts
« on: September 03, 2010, 10:49:26 pm »

I just got an artifact with an image of itself on it...

Does this happen very often?

That means that dwarves in strange moods must have the ability to see into the future! They wouldn't be able to make an image of the finished artifact without knowing what it will look like ahead of time.

A better question is how you even put an image of a chain on a chain...must be some serious precision engraving.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

Planepacked had a picture of itself on itself in 73 different spots.

It was truly a fractal artifact.

Did someone say... Planepacked?

It's an old drawing, and I really didn't do it justice...

If the artifact chain has a picture of itself on it, wouldn't the engraved chain have a picture of itself on it as well? Which would lead to another engraving of itself, then another, and another, and another...

If you could take a close enough look at a fractal artifact, you would find tiny images of the original artifact on each individual electron.

And all those images would be of the highest quality.

You can't. It's like trying to evaluate f(∞) where f(x) = x+f(x). You get stuck in infinite recursion.

AND THEN YOU REVEAL THE MATHEMATICAL HFS.

I always like to think that self referantial artifacts have the referanced picture at such an angle that the loop wouldn't be possible.

Artifact Breastplate has an image of Artifact Breastplate on it in Glass!

I view this as the picture is of the back of the breastplate, but the picture itself is of the front of the breastplate, as such, no loop.

But the act of adding the image would deform the artifact in some small way, which would have to be reflected in the image, so that the infinite loop still happens.
