In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

The reason I now hate this thread is because it made me believe there'd just been a big oil leak until I got to Page 3 and I was like, "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-"

Chernobyl was as more or less as bad as it gets with a nuclear plant melt down. However, according to Time Magazine, its not the most polluted city on earth, nor is it the second most polluted. Those honors go toward a city in China and India.

But yea, the area around Chernobyl is still pretty horrid. And, with modern plant designs, can't really happen again. From what I know of it, Chernobyl plant was poorly built and poorly maintain during a period of instability of the country. It was really a matter of time.

I've never read the novel.  It may be good for all I know.  For hokey old sci-fi, I mean.  The movie, however, was terrible.  It went well past "so bad it's good" all the way to "so bad it's terrible".
