Britain has no responsibility for Beyond Petroleum.  I mean, it's an independant company.

Anyway... perhaps some kind of safety regulations are in order?

If anything, this will help push for safety regulations. Anyways, AFAIK, it hasn't collapsed into the ocean yet, so it'll be alot easier to find out what went wrong.

I dont mean Britain as in their national budget. I mean Britain as in, in general british economy. BP is an UK based company, and presumably most of it's properties are there. Thus, if they go through dire straits to foot the bill, it will hurt american workers less than if it had been, say, Rockefeller Petrol, or whatever

By my understanding, oil rigs are destroyed relatively often. The whole leaking-into-the-ocean shtick has only happened once in the history of history. Of course, the next few rigs to blow are going to be a big deal because people who didn't care until the BP spill expect them to cause an environmental disaster.

So far, of the news media I've heard/read about this from, not a single one have bothered to point out that this wasn't the same kind of oil rig as the deepwater horizon (that was the name, right?) one. Very responsible of them.
Though, to be fair, it hasn't exactly been played up either, mostly taken place among notices and such "small news".

Except for the Ixtoc one, which was like 3/4 the Deepwater Horizon.  That's what everyone with any brains was bitching about, how the fuck the exact same disaster could happen again thirty years later, and the owning-company had absolutely no better tools or plan to respond to it.

I recently discovered a report of an incident in a diving bell around a rig owned by BP.  Someone opened a hatch which caused the diving bell to shoot out of its housing (It had just docked) and everybody got sucked out.  The guy closest to the door actually blew apart from the pressure and they found pieces of him like 30 yards away.
