Hang on, you can issue a kill on...awesome.
« on: September 01, 2010, 07:51:58 pm »

So I just discovered I can issue a kill squad order on visiting elven merchants. Well, so much for elaborate kill traps or goblin ambush squads in order to force the elves to wage war on me. Now I can actually outright slaughter the merchants and take their stuff ^^ My military shall never want for titles!

I have nothing else to add except BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

An elf diplomat tried to convince my expedition leader not to cut down trees.  My expedition leader was also my militia commander, a legendary swordsdwarf with over 100 kills.  Unfortunately, the answer he gave was not as clear cut as I hoped (pun intended), as the elves sent another diplomat the next year.

What about magma? Elves don't have anything of particular value anyway.

Here at Bay12, we're constantly looking for ways to set the world on fire.
But at least after all the chaos, the weather cleared.

You didn't happen to dump the body down a convenient deep hole, did you?

Almost, I threw it down a 2 story hole, filled with burning graphite blocks, along with soon to be burning elf junk that their caravan brought.

Depending on the map the wood they bring can be extremely valuable. Poorly forested area with no sedimentary layers (no coal or lignite)? Yeah, bring me all that wood, baby...

I just wish you could turn the junk wooden armor into charcoal. Kinda like a melt feature for wooden items.

Actually, it's more of what the elves value, dwarfs find little use in.  Now, the cheap, "less valuable" stuff the elves bring when pissed, but not quite to war, is far more awesome as they start bringing cages of giant eagles and such.

Are you still playing 40d? With the (rather bugged) increased trade capacity of pack animals, elves almost never run out of room when bringing trade goods, so they won't be bringing 100% cloth like they did in the old days. Sure, they may bring 50 bins of cloth, but they'll be bringing dozens of caged animals as well.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Personally, I find that Elves are an excellent source of polar bears. I haven't the slightest idea where they're getting them, but I digress.

I found the grizzly bear that they sold to my last fort to be a highly efficient and entertaining goblin executioner. At least until it was replaced by a captured dragon, which was far more entertaining overall, but unfortunately resulted in less severed goblin bits.

You know, I did have an inkling to kill that Diplomat who has been hanging around my fortress since Spring, and I did consider issuing the kill order. Then again, she does sound pretty in her description.
