Why won't the world burn?
« on: August 29, 2010, 04:36:46 pm »

I decided recently to start a megaproject that required I have both steel and a desert. Sadly, I couldn't find a desert with limestone so I settle for some grassy hills. My plan was to turn the hills into a desert by periodically burning the world with magma, except the grass isn't catching on fire. The magma is just sitting there, burning the grass beneath it and melting my gear assemblies, but not starting an inferno. What's going on?

I dunno, but if it doesn't work, apply magma lignite bins.

Magma didn't initiate wildfires in 40d and it apparently still doesn't.

Do you have a renewable water source?  A solidified lava flow is kind of like a desert...  failing that, try the the worldgen thread, if you're not too far along.  Volcano + flux + desert is fairly common, afaik.

Turn temperature on?

It wouldn't work anyway - the grass would regrow.

This is correct the answer.

I've started plenty of fires with Magma.

Don't know what your problem is.

This.
So much this...
I think you have to be on a hot biome though with the grass being yellow...
Doesnt really spread with green grass.

I summoned my magma most of the times though.

Pour magma on a log, designate the log for dumping in the grass, lock the doors so your sacrificial hauler doesn't spread the Burning Sickness through the rest of the fort.

The only thing i could possibly think of is your temperature is off.

Even in temperate/cold places using any magma for defense at all has ruined a fort every single time, because any time anyone steps outside(even in places magma never got to and after the magma is gone) it's so hot they spontaneously burst into heavy bleeding and die in a few seconds. Fires will be starting everywhere, ashes will even burn. I never can get a fort to recover from that.

But why don't you just make the tempreture settings during world gen to tempreture 90-100 and rainfall to 0-10?

Sow the ground with salt! Burn the trees and slaughter all  life in the region! Erect a towering burning edifice to Armok! And if all else fails then you simply have failed to use ENOUGH magma.
