So, any trick to get a Dungeon Master?
« on: August 21, 2010, 10:39:53 am »

I just got a baron promoted from within, I'd like to try and make the DM arrive.

The wiki is rather vague, in the discussion page some people report a DM arriving without being a barony, but the wiki page says it's a requirement.

If you've seen the DM arrive can you report how you got him? Is it just a hit-or-miss thing or is there some trick? Do you need the economy on?

Or maybe some tweaks to the baron's POSITION raw could make it happen?

Raw for reference (in entity_default.txt):

That's what I'm working on right now.  I got the baron-count-duke chain figured out and I should be getting the king soon; I think the arrival of the dungeon master might have something to do with the arrival of the king, but I'm not sure.  There's nothing in the raws that suggest it, but it's clear you need at least a baron for it to happen.  Back in 40d I believe it required a "feature" like a river or magma, but since this entire system has been revamped for 0.31 it's probably irrelevant.

I should be getting the king soon, so after that I'll keep an eye out for the dungeon master and the other nobles.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

I refused promotions to baron, said we prefer to keep independent, had the worst siege ever with 2 FBs attack, and a king arrive. Still no Dungeon Master. Maybe it's a bug like with the barony promotions and diplomats?
Might be related...

Could be related to my total inability to have my expedition leader become the mayor. I've been running my current fort for 2 years past the 50 dorf mark, up near the 80s in population, and my nobles screen still shows him as an "expedition leader". Since updating to .31.12, I've yet to see a mayor, and I've had forts of 130+ dorfs!

I have 178 dorfs with in-game year 10. I think something might be buggy about it.

You could add the [RESPONSIBILITY:COLLECT_TAXES] tag to something that will come (Say... King?) and add the [RESPONSIBILITY:ESCORT_TAX_COLLECTOR] tag to the DM.

I'm not sure what you're proposing would accomplish.

I meant "modifying the dungeon master's POSITION raw"

I've tried duplicating the bookkeper position to create a DUNGEON_KEEPER, and replacing the responsibility to TAME_EXOTICS. The goal is being to appoint who's gonna train your pets.
The "appointing someone to it" part works but you need to regen a world for it to show the option. I haven't tested for the task of training exotic pets.

First it would need tweaking for showing up just on certain conditions. Suggestions?

Modify the dungeon master raw to make him appointed by the mayor. Maybe remove any population restriction for the dungeon master too.

Why not have him arrive with the liaison?

You could also just remove the [pet:exotic] tags from creatures.
