I think I made a post about this in some other thread a while back but I think this deserves it's own thread.

It's a documentary primarily about music remixing but also about copyright and patent laws in general.  It's pretty interesting and thought provoking, though obviously some will be inclined to not think about it at all and just rant about how great or terrible it is.  It's actually been out for a while now but with all the talk we have about copyright and DRM in games I was surprised to be the only person I've seen mentioning it.

A very interesting movie. When I play CoD with my friends, we usually set up a 'hacked' server since they abolished the dedicated servers and the client/server-side commands. It looks like it backfired on them, for the pc version, as the people who play with hacks often disrupt the normal games, but with an active admin on the cracked ptp games, they can be removed, and the gameplay is so much more fun. We all paid to play the game, we should be able to play it the way we want it, and not be bothered by some statistical ranking system.

It'd be interesting to try MW2 on PC.  I've played it on PS3 but I can't really justify making a purchase of a game like that.  Especially when it costs sixty dollars.  It's fun but leaves you feeling kind of like you just watched a really fancy but stupid action movie.  I guess that's getting a bit off topic.

The thing is, pretty much all multiplayer console games do things the way MW2 does.  It's just that MW2 tried to do it on PC which has higher standards.  Of course some would say they're just different standards and there's nothing "better" about not wanting to hand over all control to the company who made the game you bought.

I find CoD to have the best matchmaking of the console games though. It's quick and usually finds good connections. Other games have awful matchmaking. Gears of War 2's is useless. Also, TF2 on the Xbox tried to do it more or less the computer way and it's a disaster. It's impossible to find a decent server although that could be down the fact that only around 10 people play it on Xbox.

That's getting even more off topic. :P  Although I'm curious how a server browser could work for a console game.  Are there official dedicated servers or is everything just listen only?  It seems like TF2 is a rare example of a modern PC port.  That is, a game designed mainly for PC then ported to console.  That or they realized after release that the XBox just didn't give them what they wanted.

One major issue with the consoles as opposed to the PC although it isn't IP related, is the control the companies making the hardware maintain over it, and any games released on it.  Hardware capabilities aside, a game like Dwarf Fortress would be impossible on X-Box 360 and because Microsoft would never allow it to be distributed for free.  Sony is starting to head that way too.  That and they'd probably want to have some amount of control over the IP.

I know on the PS2, Star Wars Battlefront gave you the option of ps2/computer or just computer-based servers, and the PCs can be dedicated.

MW2 for the computer is pretty much a console port for the PC, even with aim assist on the sniper rifles.

Games with more modability tend to have a larger and more outlasting crowd. Take Total Annihilation, for example. It has new mods and maps even today.

Of course no one's getting any money for TA mods, and if any modder tried to you can be sure whoever currently owns the IP would suddenly start caring about it again all of a sudden.

For console games modding is not a good thing.  At least as far as the people making money of those games are concerned.  If people could design their own levels for MW2 how much less money would they make selling ported Modern Warfare 1 levels in at 3 dollars a piece?  Of course you can't even choose to buy the actual new levels by themselves, only the whole fifteen dollar five pack...  And you can't even play them in the normal modes...

Oh yeah, and if you want to play HQ mode with the Hardcore modifier but don't want that stupid reverse team damge, or any mode other than team deathmatch with more than 12 players, or if you wanted to play Capture the Flag without the chance of a random number generator deciding on a different mode any time before the release of the most recent patch, Tough noogies.  They didn't add that when designing their small number of preset game modes that are completely uncustomizable.

Or you can illegally hack and actually get full access to your product.

I paid for my car, I should be allowed to turn on the radio and the air condition separately instead of only being allowed to select pre created combinations of Radio station/volume, and AC temperature.

It's not like customization is some unheard of feature.  It's standard issue in most other FPS games.

Quake, UT, their sequels, BF 1942, BF whatever else.  Halo, Resistance....

it's their game, a 'standard feature' is whatever the hell they feel like shipping with

as the consumer it's entirely your fault if you choose to support a publisher / developer's decision to omit or include a feature you don't like or want but still choose to purchase anyway

you still bought the game and validated their decision to do whatever the hell they want, because hey, you still bought it, thus proving that they can really do whatever the hell they want with their own game and you'd curse loudly while still handing over money for it

The lack of customizability isn't exactly an advertised feature.  You'd have to have played online multiplayer before to know it was there.

Also, just for the sake of accuracy I should point out that it was a gift from my brother's girlfriend.

This reminds me of that old joke about Lee Iacocca and Bill Gates regarding the development of the Computer versus the Auto Industry. Can't remember how it goes, though.
