Dungeons 2011 - Now with 50% less thread disappointment
« on: August 12, 2010, 03:55:25 pm »

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/08/12/dungeons-no-keeper/

Found this while reading the RPS article on Bioshock Infinite. (And I found it more exciting than BS:I).

Kalyspo Media is making a full-on, Dungeon Keeper 2 knock off. They've artfully dodged around names and such that would be an IP infraction, but are making the same basic game with newer technology.

Quote
Prepare to have the roles reversed as you play a despicable Dungeon Lord whose job is to create fiendish dungeons to lure and trap heroes who dare to try and steal your treasure. Dungeons is currently in development by Realmforge, a Kalypso Media studio and is scheduled for release in Q1 2011.

Quote
At his disposal are his dim-witted goblin minions who dig tunnels and build rooms to lay out his lair and trap ever stronger and braver heroes who dare to enter, not forgetting to plot his revenge against his ex-girlfriend and his new bosses who think it’s great fun to bombard him with useless tasks. It goes without saying that a malicious and sneaky creature such as our Dungeon Lord has more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Revenge will be sweet indeed.

Features –

Get ready for a fight! Lure 10 different hero classes into your dungeon where 15 different monsters lurk in the darkness
20 challenging campaign missions demand all your cunning to succeed. Survive them – and there’s still the custom game waiting for you
In a dungeon there’s only one way you can go and that’s down. Conquer three different underworld levels and the bosses who guard them to become the one and only Dungeon Lord
Prison cells and torture chambers are at your command and ready to capture your next hero and steal their precious soul energy
Create the dungeon of your dreams (and heroes’ nightmares) with 50 different objects at your disposal
Wimpy goblin workers are awaiting your orders to create your next diabolical dungeon masterpiece

Not many games are what I'd call "a dream come true" but this one of them. This is no "EA selling off a great IP to the Chinese so they can tear it apart and make it into an MMO." This is about a game that everyone loved, and these guys are determined to bring back.

I'll drop this here too:

A fan made DKII remake project. Looks like it's in the early stages of development and is ripping lots of code and stuff straight from DKII. More power to them though, hope it gets done in time to get played before Dungeons.

Well, it does seem like good news.

Although the flavour text makes the setting sound like Overlord. Which was neither atmospheric, nor funny. Less "haha lol evehl" and more bad ass evil, please. But that's a minor detail compared to whether or not they'll make it as complex as Dungeon Keeper.

This.  I can manage if the world is a little tongue-in-cheek but it has to be subtle, which isn't something game developers are good with.  Majesty was good about this, Majesty 2 was awful about it.  The whole game was one big joke, and the joke wasn't even funny.  Same with Overlord.

Crossing my fingers that at least one of these comes out well!

I don't remember DKII being all that serious of a game. The over the top evil narrator...the off-hand comments he makes throughout game play....I mean, they play Disco Fever when one of your minions wins in the casino.

Could they over do it? Sure. But DK is already established as being somewhat tongue in cheek, somewhat silly. As long as they don't hit us with the 10-ton-hammer of silliness, I don't think they can really do wrong.

Judging by the few SS they have...it already looks like it's retained DKII's darker edge.

No, it wasn't, and I didn't like that.  I'd like to see a game in this style that completely does away with the jokes.

Well, I'm never opposed to some GRIMDARK. But I fell in love with DK2 despite the cheesiness (in some places, I think it made me like it even more.)

The story blurb already shows you which way it is going. Cheeky. It does seem to be a symptom of these types of games though that they always include a lot of humor. And Virtz, I agree with you completely on Overlord. But if mechanically meets up to DKII, it will take a lot to make me not like it. Like...clowns and bunny rabbits.

Well, the thing is, DK1 wasn't humorous that way. Visually it was pretty dark. And the humour was rather dark. Or maybe my memory is shoddy and you should disregard this.

However I do recall that DK2 got more humorous and colourful than DK1. But I don't recall it being on Overlord/Fable level of evil silliness and incompetence. It's the whole bosses and ex-girlfriend blurb that makes me think this may lean too much towards the stupidly silly kind of evil. But I may just be reading too much into it.

Hmmm, I don't know. The intros to each of the missions were pretty darn funny. Dark humor, mind you, but very funny nonetheless.

Allow me to try and allay some of your fears with higher res (and more) screen shots from the game. Whatever their overall art aesthetic is, I'm pretty sure it's leaning toward GRIMDARK.

Curse you, internet. See next post

Voice acting and such will likely be a different story. And it bears remembering that you looked pretty bad ass in games like Overlord, too.
