I almost have to wonder - is the saltiness a function of z-level?  All the solutions - well, pump, etc - seem based around dragging it up to a higher level.  For the ocean one z-level would get it above the salt plain (For lack of a better word), but for aquifers, it'd need to be higher.

Any evidence of that?  I've never embarked on an ocean.

According to the wiki forum, the game saves FPS by not keeping track of whether each tile is salty or not. Just whole layers. IIRC.
If thats how it works then the simple test is to build the cistern +/- 1 z-level from the salt-layer, instead of at it, and see if it "suddenly" works.

Thats exactly what I plan to test.   My current cistern is in the middle of a river valley, where the valley walls are salty aquifers.   I'm going to build several layers of cisterns on top of each other (out of the same materials, just to keep the testing uniform), and check each layer to see if it becomes drinkable at a certain point.  Will post here with the results once I manage to do the building.

Don't forget to try testing downward to, if you can. I'm going to assume knowing how to depressurize water is a must for the downward testing. ;)

Yeah, that's on my to-do list as well, once I figure out where the bottom of my aquifers are... I have irregular aquifer layers at the bottom (I'm 3 levels below where I thought the aquifers stopped, and still finding aquifer extrusions periodically poking down into the layer... going to need to go down a bit farther.

So I built cistern over cistern going upwards in my fort, each one made out of sylvite blocks, with a wooden pump until I was 2 z-levels above the river (I'll call this S+2) prior its going over the waterfall (which is the highest natural salt water on the map) - every cistern is filled with salt water.   I tried making a cistern entirely out of Iron at S+3 (iron blocks for floors/walls, all the pump pieces are iron), still salt water.

Havent had a chance to go downwards yet.  I do have an impractical, rather odd yellow stone tower capped with Iron, full of salt water now though :P

That's the generally dwarfy thing to do with ANY substance.
Got a river going through your area? Put a floodgate on it and kill elves with it.
Got a massive magma plume that appeared in the center of your fort? Put a floodgate on it and kill elves with it.
Got more rocks than you can think of what to do with? Put a floodgate on it and kill elves with it.
Dwarven mothers being too "active"? Put a floodgate on it and kill elves with it.

I can see how making murderous babies would kill elves, but not how unleashing the pet rocks would kill them.

Please, sir, enlighten me.
Place rocks and floodgate on top of pillar, which is rigged to fall on enemies when they step on a pressure pad. Do the same with dwarf babies. Lure elves onto pressure pad.

You could also propel the babies with fluids and hope some of them bite.

I love it how any discussion no matter how esoteric or what its origin is it eventualy makes its way to ways of killing elves or babies. One of the many reasons i love dwarf fortress  :)

Okay, that would explain the error. Now it makes sense, the game keeps track of salt by layers, not the water itself. Someone needs to test this!!
