Desalinating Water
« on: August 11, 2010, 07:15:35 pm »

The wiki, and I quote, says to:
"Dwarves can not drink salt water until it has been desalinated. Water can be desalinated through the construction of a pump that pumps water into a completely constructed cistern. A well no longer desalinates water.

Source: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Water#ixzz0wLWIcLVp"

I tried that. It didn't work at all. How do I do it?

He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

If the water touches anything that isn't contructed, it becomes tainted again.

I had a completely built cistern that was floating in the air. The pump was the only connection.

I've desalinated water by constructing a cistern and all channels leading to it out of rock blocks. Worked perfectly.

You know, I've never had to build a cistern. I embark on oceans and have had wells going directly into the ocean water. Yet Dwarves always drank out of them without harm.

Wells work just fine for desalinating water.

As for the pump, I embarked on a volcano near the ocean, no ocean tiles visible, but all of the murky pools were salt water.  I quickly built a small wooden square, used a retractable wooden bridge for the floor, plugged the hole in the wall with a wooden pump, and had fresh water.  A few wooden ramps, and a nice path leading past the wooden cistern to the trade depot, and I was ready for my first Elven caravan. :)  I probably should have made the path a wood block road.  Maybe next time.

Also, obviously, magma avalanches and tsunamis weren't exactly a contingency covered in the mission briefing.
I can assure you that Ardentdikes is not the first fortress to be flooded with magma. What's unusual is that we actually meant to flood it with magma.

Same. Again, wiki lies.

So if you've tried this in game and the wiki is wrong update it.

The wiki never lies.

For a saltwater aquifer, I recommend to pump some of it to the z-level above.. The room there does not need smoothed or constructed walls. The water will be fine for drinking.

It becomes more complicated when you start to drop the saltwater some z-levels a lot of z-levels. It was very much saltwater when I once used it to flood one of those rock islands of the magma sea.

Worked fine for me couple versions ago, although I haven't embarked on ocean in .12.

Mind showing us a picture of your cistern?

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.
Ashes are technically fire-safe.
