Second: It reveals that I am town but I do not get to know if the other person is town. I can recruit anyone, so it's entirely hunch based.

Mafia has not tried to kill anybody
Mafia as tried killing someone but it did not work, so that person was hidden/protected.

If someone protected another good chances are that person could be town. Clearly it's not foolproof but it is usefull info. Can already say i have not used my smoke bomb, so I was not targeted or someone protected me.

That doesn't clear YOU. If you lied about them losing their NK, and you are the last scum, then you could have simply refrained from NKing. I have no clue what you could have been doing with the people you "guarded." I'm just saying that I don't remember you being cleared for having told the truth by someone else.
