Stairs dont work?

Whenever i try to make some stairs down they dont work...so if i switch to the next down-level it just appears to be that there are infact no downstairs T_T
Help please?

If you make down stairs here, there has to be a receiving up stairs on the level below. Try a stack of "up/down" stairs and check out

The problem is i cant build anything down there as i cant reach the level?
It looks like this now:


1st level:
X<---Up/down stairs
X

2nd lvl
Nothing.


So i cannot see to the 2nd lvl or build anything there?

Designate up stairs on that level. You should be digging when going downwards - building downwards staircases from materials won't make up stairs appear on the level below, you'll have to dig them out.

Which means i have to dig out the "earth" under my up/down stairs?

Found my stupid fault, i tried to make stairs with wood...im so dumb sometimes xD.
Anyways thanks for the help and wish me luck with my completely new fortress which will be aswell surface as underground-based hehe.
