Suggestions for my "Great Hall" project?
« on: August 01, 2010, 10:46:33 pm »

So I'm sort of doing this project in my current game where we're building this great entrance hall, completely enclosed, and I was wondering if any of you might perhaps have some ideas on what to add to it or perhaps changes? You'll also notice in the image building, that's another of my projects, I'm making a "tree fortress" type of thing but that at the moment is irrelevant, so yeah, thoughts?

Hmm... I tend to go with whatever kind of theme I have going in a given fort, so coming up with something off the top of my head is a little hard.

I actually don't do much for my entry hall, and instead really splurge on my dining hall.

In fact, maybe you should do a multi-level entry hall, and have your dining hall be in a giant mezzanine or balcony overlooking your entryway.

Line the entrance with statues, of course, and make it as if you were using the statues as the supports holding up the balcony (preferably made of purely dwarf statues, so that the dwarven greats are supporting the balcony).

Adding waterfalls that cascade along the balcony and down into the entrance would also work, although if you're dead set on magma just for the meme, magma falls are OK.

I also personally like to use the caged megabeasts I catch as a "conversation piece" on a ledge, and make a zoo alongside all the statues.

Of course, depending on the theme you have for your fortress, you could do something different, like make it a giant nautalus shape or something.

Question: Why is your entrance hall in the goddamn soil layer?
Suggestion: Complicated flowing magma patterns and a wide corridor lined with masterwork statues made from the most valuable metal you have available.

So we got monsters above, monsters below, dwarves in the middle and a party in the dining hall. Sounds good to me.
If all else fails, remember one thing:  kittens are delicious, nutritious little goblin-baiters, cavern explorers, and ambush-finders.

Actually, if it's the soil layer, then you should probably dig up the floors, and cast the whole thing in obsidian.

If you're on the soil layer, channel it all until you get down to a stone layer, and start from there. You'll have a multi-story cathedral ceiling.

Do what I did, pump a large quantity of magma from the pipe into a reservoir area above its current level.  Build your entrance acrossed the magma pipe so that it is completely enclosed.  Then pour the magma back in, making your entrance a tunnel through magma.  Be sure to use some windows so that all the visitors can marvel at being surrounded by magma.

Though you may make fun of me for it, I just felt like building it there. The thing has since been completely enclosed with Schist, dug out from dosens of tunnels in the rock, with Cobaltite roads leading to the cobaltite depot.

And if you saw the building near the top left corner that's going to be a "Tree Fortress" in the sky. It's already about 4 z-levels tall but I had stopped work on that before I had even begun working on the grand hall. I might go a total of 10 Z-levels before making the "tree branches" With enough time and work that thing's gonna be awesome.
