Trying ASCII
« on: July 25, 2010, 05:42:23 am »

Hello fellow dwarves!
I started playing dwarf fortress a few weeks ago using graphic tilesets. Prepacked; no need to fiddle around with settings, just ran the exe.
Now I want to try playing the game with the "core" ASCII but I can't find a way to set things up properly.
So I got a few questions: sorry if these have been answered before...  ::)

Whats the difference between SDL & Legacy Version?
I'm running Windows Vista with my resolution set to 1920x1080. Can you guys help me setting up the .ini properly?
Any recommendations on which tilesets I can use? I think I defenitely wanna try the square ones but stick to the original feeling as best I can.
Should I tweak the color palettes too? So, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Would like to play fullscreen, so hopefully you guys can help me! :)

Thank you all very much!  ;)

Here's soome instructions:
1. Download the SDL version from the front page, if you want to play your own music while you build your fortress then download the light version.
2. Extract the files to somewhere on your computer.
3. You can play right away now, this is how most people have their game set up, just the defaults, you don't need to mess with any of the settings in the init.
Optional 4: I, however, like to play with a few modifications. Namely:
[START_ENGRAVINGS_OBSCURED: YES]
[SHOW_FLOW_AMOUNTS: YES]

Alternatively, you could just download SDL and shut off DF's sound, and turn it back on if you want to play with it on. Just use the sound mixer.

So people really play just with the default SDL windowed Dwarf Fortress? Looks so small to me! :D

You can drag the corners of the window to make it larger, and you can zoom in (at least you can in fullscreen mode).

lol Yeah, just discovered this! Thank you! ^^ But if I zoom in, everything looks so damn blurry... :\
Should I use bigger tilesets?

I suppose that might help, I haven't tried bigger tilesets, I just learn to love the blurriness.

If you're looking for a large tileset I reccomend Biasam's 24x24 tileset. It's awesome.

Ok - thank you all very much! I think I got it now. ;)
If I want to use any of the tilesets from the tileset repository I have to:

Put the font in the data/art folder and the edit the init.txt:

[WINDOWED:YES]

This is the size and font for windowed mode.  Changing to the 800x600 font might make you happier.
If set below 256x256 it specifies the grid size instead, with a minimum of 80x25.

[WINDOWEDX:80]
[WINDOWEDY:25]
[FONT:FontnameIwanttouse.bmp]

You may disable window resizing if you wish.
[RESIZABLE:YES]

---------------

Now I can drag the window corners to adjust the screen size.
Perfect. Thank you thank you! ^^
Now I can start to learn Dwarf Fortress the way its meant to be played! :D

You can set [WINDOWED:YES] to [WINDOWED:PROMPT] if you want it to ask you before it starts the game, although I guess that's what F11 is for.

Happy Dwarfing!

It depends on your monitor's resolution - DF doesn't look blurry if you have a tileset that fits your resolution, so to find the best resolution, take your horizontal resolution, and divide by 80.  That's the optimal tile size.  (My own monitor only goes up to 1280, so 16 pixels wide is the best my monitor can handle.)

You might also want to change the colors, especially the dark blue, which can be hard to read.
