Video Game Music
« on: July 16, 2010, 02:28:40 pm »

The title really says it all. What is the greatest piece(s) of video game music that you have ever heard? Is it a specific piece of melody or a whole series of games? Do you prefer epic, Lord of the Rings-esque music, more relaxing and haunting music or quick, fast-paced pieces?

Despite all the good music out there I must vouch for This first and formost. One of the best game themes out there. From Chrono Cross, the sequel to the well-liked Chrono Trigger. The lack of direction and odd battle system made it an ehh RPG, but the music was still good.

Opening from Chrono Cross is a favorite.

'Footsteps to a decisive victory' or something from lunar silver star story.  (I liked the voiced opening, but for some reason it didn't sit well with me after awhile.  Didn't age with me well.)

Schala's Theme from Chrono Trigger...  and Chrono Trigger stuff in general.

Oh... Valkyria Profile, but I downed that to 2 tracks.

Good video game music: pretty much anything in Valve games. I love the songs included as main menu music for Team Fortress 2, particularly the song from Meet the Spy. While not really my favorite music all the time, the songs in the Half Life 2 games are quite good, especially Vortal Combat. Excellent song for the battle it plays for in HL2: Episode 2. I also love the music in the Left 4 Dead series, including the Bacteria that play for the Special Infected. I find it quite atmospheric. I also like that for L4D2, they have songs by a fake band and make the band fit 2 campaigns (including The Passing, the DLC for L4D2). Though the band's songs kind of break the atmosphere of the game when played except for one of the finales. And I always get the urge to stay near the jukebox whenever someone makes it play a song.

To the questions in the opening post: I like atmospheric music the best in FPS games, fast-paced orchestra songs in most other games.

Ozar Midrashim from Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver <3

And a whole bunch of others I can't remember. The soundtrack from Dissidia Final Fantasy is pretty decent too.

Assassin's Creed 2
Almost all of the Hitman games
Vagrant Story
Silent Hill 2
Fable (yeah yeah, Danny Elfman, whatever)
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit)
Secret of Evermore

Also obligatory link for Galbadia Hotel: http://gh.ffshrine.org/

They have a staggering array of video game and anime sound tracks.

I tend to prefer two types: dramatic and heart breakingly sad. Schala's theme from Chrono Trigger really hit a chord with me, that's why I'll always remember that game with love. I really love Jesper Kyd (Assassin's Creed, Hitman). He just does his themes so well, and mixes just enough techno, electric guitar, chanting, ect... to make it interesting without becoming overly cliched.

Assassin's Creed 2: Tour of Venice
Assassin's Creed 2: Venice Rooftops

My only objection is he over does remixing main themes...but it's still good for the ear.

Oh yea, forgot to mention that almost all Shin Megami Tensei/Persona/Devil Summoner games have godly soundtrack.

Also, Age of Wonders music, any of them.

It depends on the music, really. Here are some of my favorites.

Pokemon Sapphire - Encounter with Regi(rock/ice/steel)
Medieval II Teutonic - Hymn of War
Civilizations IV - Baba Yetu

Propably because of nostalgia, but I really like the music in Tiberian Sun.

The Wild Arms games had some rather nice music. The first ones theme is prety much what made me play the game the whole way through. It was a decent old JRPG, but the music was inspiring enough to make me go through it. Although as the games went on the main theme started to slip a little from the cool western whistles, orchestral bits and perhaps a bit overly mushy songs to Techno JPOP.

And we can't forget Lauras Theme.
