The worst part is that out of all cases of torture, they had failed to extract any meaningful information out of it.
They literally failed at their actual job while also conducting human right violations.

Yeah, you just have to look at history and the fact that torturees will generally just tell you what you want to hear and not the actual truth. Heck, I heard that some of them even made up stuff.

Why the DOJ (Department of Justice) decided not to prosecute, I have no idea. As much as politicians don't like the idea, the US should be dragged before the international court or something.

Then again, NK is doing way worse things than we are and they haven't been dragged screaming in front of an international court.

... as always, the defense, "At least we're doing better than North Korea" is perhaps not the stance anyone sane wants to be taking. It's kinda' like saying, "Be glad only your leg is on fire."

I wasn't making it into a defense, just making a point of how ineffective the international court is at dragging people accused of human rights violations in front of the court, because UN.

Oh, there's also the fact that USA government has condemned the use of torture in many, many other governments, while turning a blind eye on themselves.

Yeah.

I'm pretty sure they don't drag NK leaders in front of an international court for various reasons, none of which is letting them slide on human right's violations. I don't think NK is getting any special treatment.

America, on the other hand, is part of the UN< and helped write the documents on all of this, and definitely signed them. We have executed leaders for less.

SO the DOJ did drop it? Wow, that's... well that's my day.

Yeah.

The spinning torture strikes the moral authority in the authority, shattering the authority, tearing the politics, bruising the UN, and pulping the moral!
the moral authority is struck down!

Yep, they decided not to do anything.

I'm one of those people who would stare at you.

Christmas isn't a religious holiday in my mind. Saying you don't celebrate christmas is fine, but I don't see what not being religious has to do with it.
I can't hold it against you for not linking Christmas to religion in your mind as it is not my right to do so. But it is a fact that Christmas is, by default and definition, a festival that celebrates the birthday of Jesus Christ. Which consequentially makes it religious. Nothing wrong if you and your dear ones get together on such occasion, heck, I personally have nothing against having any sort of celebration on the 25th of December. But I just won't celebrate Christmas.

Yea there's nothing wrong with not celebrating Christmas.

I have a holiday tree and observe it, but I'd like it to be significantly less intrusive. Unless they take everything Jesus and God out of it and make it a holiday about Santa Claus. (Who is also a religious figure, but I was thinking more the modern interpretation.)

It would have to be renamed though. But it would allow people of varying faiths to celebrate it without feeling uncomfortable.

Also if we could make Thanksgiving a day of remembrance for the indigenous people of America who were mass slaughtered by settlers, that would be good. Since we are doing requests.

Superficially, yes. Actually, It JUST SO HAPPENS to coincide with older pagan holidays (Yuletide, whatchamacallits in Rome) while not being supported as a birthday in the Bible, either specifically or not - in fact being contradicted by things described in NT like shepherds' being in field, guarding the grazing sheep, which is pretty damn unlikely in December.

I swear officer, it fell off a holiday truck!

Is it considered a bigger holiday than Christmas or not, though?

Christmas is definitely bigger. And New Year's really has no lead up to it. It's just the eve and then the hangover the next day.

Christmas season stuff goes from right after halloween sometimes, and at least after thanksgiving.

There's been Christmas cheer in the air since mid-October.

Oh, I know that. I mean, if we are really being pedantic, we COULD even go around discussing how JC maybe wasn't even real... HOWEVER I don't wish to really have anything with this discussion. The point is - Christmas is recognized by the church as religious holiday and me not being religious thus see no real use of celebrating it.

Do you have any holidays in 1 January, though?
Here where I live we used to have a day off even on the 2nd January, but the bastards took that away from us so we are left with only 1st of January these days. As for it being bigger - maybe, I guess. As mentioned, Christmas is quite widely celebrated this days, in one form or the other, but it's on the 31st December we have those special TV shows and massive fireworks.
