I can tell the difference between trolls and crazy people. There's an easy way to find out, really: pretend to agree with them. If they respond positively, they're probably just crazy. If they don't respond at all, they're probably trolling. Trolls revel in the negative responses they get from people; if they get a positive response, they're likely to ignore it and focus on the negative ones.
If you want to discourage a troll, be polite and courteous, no matter what. If they don't get their fix, they'll get bored and move onto something else.
