To make matters worse, we get billed for each time the fire alarm goes off for no reason.  :-\
Is that legal? Sounds like they can trip the alarm repeatedly just to bleed some extra money.

I honestly don't know :P

The viking picture fits in with some islands off Scotland who associate heavily with vikings and Scandinavians.

EDIT: Now that I look at it, his avatar may not be viking...huh. I always saw it as such  :P

Suppose it was the words below it that took my attention more than anything else.

Another interesting question is, how much is each apartment billed? For example, if there's a false alarm the fire dept may fine the building owner each time. It can get expensive. But if the owner is billed $500 and there are 20 apartments and each one gets billed $25, that could make sense. But if every apartment gets billed $50 ... the building owner now has a monetary incentive to get that alarm pulled. Anyway, it's effectively punishing everyone for one person's actions just because they can't catch whoever did it, which is like if there's a murder in a neighborhood you go around punching every resident in the face once. It also effectively gives the tenants an illusory duty to keep people from tripping the fire alarm, which is a shitty thing to do.

This may be an issue that's specifically carved out in your landlord-tenant law as a protection that the tenant enjoys, or it may not be protected against. You may want to see if there's a low-income or even free tenant legal service near you. Sometimes there's one in or near the courthouse which defends tenants for free. Even if they can't help (such as because they only help people who are being evicted) they can still point you in the direction of other affordable legal services. Might be worth checking out and getting a professional opinion.

Hell if I know if its legal or not, and yeah, there have been more than a few rumors about that.

*edit*
@Leo,
Its 25 dollars per time iirc. Though we don't have to pay additionally for the first time since its taken out of a "deposit" that we don't get back even if we don't use it. Getting legal help is an option, but this is a college dorm so it would be likely more trouble than hassling with your run of the mill landlord. Getting an apartment somewhere else is an option in coming semesters, but I'm SOL for now since I'm required to live in the dorm for freshman year. (Although freshman year ends this Saturday for me.)

Though since it is a college dorm rather than having 20 tenets they have 400, so they would be getting 10k each time the fire alarm was pulled.

Maybe the top half is Canadian and the bottom half is Scottish. Best of both worlds, a hit with all the ladies.

I met a Scottish guy once. On Saint Patrick's day weekend, ironically.
Pretty sure a lot of drinking was involved regardless.

*Descan fades back into the mist from whence he came, a mad chortle on his lips. The puny earthlings, the mortal dregs of society, question his place of birth. He does not answer. He holds his derision as a second heart, cradles it to himself as if it were a babe. He was never a babe. He was never born.

Descan is beyond definition. Descan is above borders. Descan is DESCAN!
