By having a selection of people with the depicted views, they are drawing on a single unifying object (The hat) in an attempt  to associate having a hat as being the same as having those views. It's the same with like... associating owning a Ute with being an ignorant countryman or reading a certain newspaper labels you as supporting all the views that newspaper puts forward.

My calling for a page with people with those views without hats was an attempt to show that there is a greater number of people without hats with those views.

People need to wear more hats. They're neat and keep the sun off your head!
