Probably a good 20-30 minutes beating the same goddamn set of calculations over the head with a proverbial hammer. Ended up finding out I was one fucking digit off. The number I needed in a particular spot was a 4, instead of a 3.

Fortunately the last thing I need to do tonight, but... that's always massively, massively annoying.

Argh.....forgetting to modify one field on a web page resulted in bringing a business down for.....5 hours, while we frantically regex'd and find/replaced the mistakes. GGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

The nice thing about royal fuckups like this is it exposes vulnerabilities and weaknesses in your tool chain. Not much of a silver lining but at least it's something.

AAANNNNNDDDD I'm still dealing with this mess. GO GO 12 hour work day!

I must say, after borking up an entire company's data, watching our fix process millions of lines of corrections a second is slightly terrifying.

The fact that you had multiple millions of corrections to make scares me.

Databases are serious business.

Especially when the business in question entered 4,000 parts and probably an equal number of sales and purchase orders in one day. Each record is probably 10 rows worth of data spread out and linked across multiple tables. So when shit goes wrong, fixes are not simple.

It makes me sincerely grateful that I have co-workers who understand these relationships way better than I do.

Why would his wife object to a puppy?! IS SHE A MONSTER!?
I dislike dogs.

I'd object to a puppy.

Why would people need to spend time with a corgi when sheltie is a breed?

Ah, but when a cat shows affection for someone you know its the real deal, and not just faking for a treat.

By "showing affection" he means walking on your lap when you're trying to read, kneading their claws into your legs, tripping you when you're going down stairs, and sticking their ass in your face when you're trying to sleep.

Also, I've pretty much given up on cats. Not because I don't adore them (I do), but because they're incredibly rough to lose. If you take care enough that they live to die a natural death, it's almost invariably something really painful to watch them go through, specifically kidney failure. I've lost five cats that way over the course of my life, most at ripe old ages, and it never gets easier. You don't want to put them down because you love them and they've got months or years yet, but you want to put them down because you love them and they're more or less falling apart inside.

Dogs are sad too, but they're easy. A few weeks of undereating, a checkup, and a quick nap when it turns out to be a tumor is a far cleaner mental break.

Mine does, but special case and all that. They have a bargain with us.

my cat does indeed seem to show affection

that might just be the mind control parasites doing their part though

One of my pet rats showed affection. It would lick my fingers constantly while it was sitting in my hand. :P I wish rats lived longer. :-\
