You know what? I'm just going to go up to H&R Block tomorrow. Screw this. My brain is too tired to deal with government bullshit right now.

One of my texts disappeared over break. FUCK YOU RANDOM MISSING-ITEM GNOMES. NOT PAYING $200 TO GET ANOTHER COPY FOR ONE DAMNED SEMESTER.

This is why I started pirating all my textbooks. Though I only have to lug around a tiny netbook.

Ah. Repetition and reuse is pretty much the basic go-to process for learning math, GO. Because math is a language, and like languages if you're going to become fluent, you have to use it and keep using it or you lose it. If either they or you aren't doing oodles of problems related to what you're trying to learn, there's basically no chance you're going to remember any of it. Best suggestion would be to set it up so you're doing 20-30 problems on the side every other day or so -- bug the teacher about it if you're unable to come up with the material yourself.

Maybe it's just because my field is a lot more technical but they let us bring with us these certified books crammed with formulas to exams. The point being, I think, that it's more important to know what formula to use and how instead of memorizing its structure. So instead memorizing of formulaic structure, we memorize the theory behind them and their uses.

Or, GreatOrder, you could do what I did, and never memorize any formulas!

Instead, get really good at deriving, and your first step at the beginning of each test/exam/homework will be to rederive all the formulas you are likely to use.

I would... not recommend this approach. But these formulas don't come out of nowhere - if you can't remember it, you should still be able to get to it fairly quickly if you've worked with it before (since you know where you'll end up, if not the details).

Continuing on with formula memorization, the most outrageous thing I've experienced is during a "Numerical methods" exam where they allowed you to bring with you the lecture material. I of course, being the poor bastard I am, couldn't afford to buy said material (I wrote it down during class) and thus went in "blind" with only my free formula book. I aced that exam.
